Seatbelt Replacement

Post by MountainMama »

Hi guys! Long time reader, first time poster.

I've had my 83' Tercel for about a year now and I've had no problems with it aside from the driver and passenger seatbelts. They don't seem to lock when I break or pull on them. I've cleaned them out with wd40 and they have not improved. There is a pick n' pull near by and I was planning on replacing them so I was wondering if anyone knew which seatbelts would be a direct replacement for the Tercel's (corrolla camry, etc.), or which cars would have an upgraded seatbelt that would also fit and perform better than the original.

Thanks,
M.M.

I've found the only way to know is to compare parts from similar year cars while at the picknpull. The corolla might work.

all of the same year range tercels are similar as far as I remember, hatch back, sendan and station wagon. I noticed that the female side that has a short lead bolted to the floor near the center tunnel is the same in the corolla, but a different color cover. I did not notice the other end.

Usually if you take the retract mechanism apart and clean it out and use dry lube on it it will work normal again. I do not know of any that would be "better" they were all similar design, all met the federal standards. if you want something better, safer (in fact far safer than the newer idiot airbags), get a racing type seat belt. A bit more trouble to connect up everytime you get in the car, but it will keep your safe and uninjured compared to just about any other system.
