for some reason they felt is was important to tell the driver you are in EL with the dash light in '85 and later T4wd, but not on the '83-84. There is no indication you are in EL on the '83-84 other than where you put the shift lever, and how slow it goes!.

Maybe they thought the driver's were distracted by the inclinometer...at least the SR5's that is...

totally agree. it's one of the coolest features of the car, IMO. and yes, the early 4runners had a similar inclinometer but it has an altimeter rather than the '4wd' indicator light. they are not interchangeable between tercs and 4runners though, unfortunately.

they came on both the JDM and the European Tercel4wd for the whole production line. I suspect it might have something to do with idiot federal requirements, perhaps safety or something. they may have to save some weight to meet the corporate ave fuel economy, the lower the weight of the vehicle, the higher their EPA cycle calculates the economy.

As cool of a feather the inclinomter is, I actually do not find it that useful. Several times when truning around on steep slopes, or on the edge of a snowy road and it tilted up beyound my comfort range, I was not looking at the dash!!!

but both my kids when they were small, and all other kids that get in the car love to watch it.
