Re: Sunroof
if it's just superficial rust, it might be cheaper to grind the rust off and repaint it.

Re: Sunroof
I tried to remove an entire sunroof assembly at pick & pull for my 85 last year.I gave up after 2 hrs it's glued with epoxy and screwed to the roof at the factory.
Perhaps the sunroof door can be removed from the entire assembly?
I don't think the FSM says anything about the sunroof.

Page BO-61 of the FSM on this site.
Problem is, most sunroofs I've seen weren't factory, they were a dealer addon!

Re: Sunroof
i think the electric sunroofs are factory, whereas the glass ones pop up (moon roofs? not sure if that's what they're called) are AM.

Re: Sunroof
BO-61 shows all the various parts but not how to service any of them.
If anyone in this forum has ever removed a sunroof from there car I would love to hear how they did it.
It is great fun however to go to the car wash and see how fast someone can get out of the front seat and into the back seat when they realize there about to take a shower

Re: Sunroof
I have completely removed the factory sunroof and rebuilt it. I do not recall any epoxy, but you have to drill out a number of rivets (I replaced them with pop-rivets). On the '84 T4wd I had brought from NM, the drive was hanging up so it would not close the last 3" (it was sealed over with a plexiglass sheet and caulk). I had to take it all apart to fix the drive, and than put all back together and install it. The FSM instructions are almost useless, the parts diagrams are the most useful part in the manual. It took all day, and it is easy to damage the parts removing/installing them so you need to proceed with caution.

Re: Sunroof
Odd I remember trying to get large Phillips head screws off that had something squished out from underneath them.
Perhaps I was trying to remove the mounting tabs or something.
Did you have to remove the head liner, I did and was trying to get the tracks and door all in one piece?
It's good to know it can be done.

Re: Sunroof
I do not remember removing it, though it appears that it had to come out (it does not). I do remember taking the trim around the opening off the edges of the head linger and pulling it down enough to get under it to inspect the way it is mounted. I think I remember some screws under the edge of the head liner at the opening itself. The whole assembly slides out forward after you remove the fasteners.
There is nothing to remove or unbolt behind the hole in the roof, it slides into a compartment aft of the opening when it is stowed when "open", but it is removed by sliding it forward, and wiggling it out through the hole in the roof. There is not anything under the head liner to remove, so it does not have to come out. All of the fasteners are accessed when the roof itself is fully open. there might be some sealant, but no epoxy that I can recall.
I do not even remember the sequence of disassemble, though I do remember removing a lot more fasteners that necessary to get it out. That is because it is not clean what has to be removed to get it out and I just unscrewed everything I found. the drive tracks come out with the roof itself, and to access the drive device you have to drill out the rivets. If your drive is good you should not have to do this, but you should try and get some lubricant in it (I used lithium grease).
good luck.

That's good to know i was trying to remove to much I had the headliner out and was attempting to remove all of it in one piece
door, track, motor etc.
Next time one comes up I will take my time and get it right.
Perhaps photograph the procedure for others.
