option for replacing propeller shaft u-joints

Post by dlb »

the prop shafts on the 4wd corolla wagons, like on the tercel, have non-serviceable, non-replaceable u-joints, and a guy from the corolla forum recently learned there are no new u-joints that fit the corolla at all. so he had a shop "cut off the ends and welded in a new yoke and flange, with new u-joints that are both serviceable (ie have zerk fittings) and replaceable if needed down the road." the cost was $200, which included balancing the shaft. sounded like a great idea so i thought i would mention it here as an option for anyone who might need to replace their tercel's u-joints.

here's the thread from the corolla forum.

$200 is a great price for doing that kind of change. I think Tom had done the same thing on his but paid much more. there are lots of drive shaft shops that can do this kind of work. I have not needed it yet since I have two good spare drive-shaft assemblies from parts cars that I scrapped.

Good price and certainly worth investigating!
I did this in 2010 for $329 - see https://tercel4wd.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=6459
