Body style difference 83-86 vs 87 88 also Automatic trans.
Hi, What is the body differences in the 83-86 vs the 87 and 88. I do know the front is more narrow, but is the shell the same? Also How are the automatic trans in the 4wd wagons? I do know the Manual trans are very good but do not have experience with the auto. I am currently on the look-out for a tercel wagon 4wd and am just trying to educate myself more so when one comes up I have the knowledge. Thanks for all the help!!

The bodies are identical. About the only exterior change is a different grill and headlamps on the (rare) '87s and (even rarer) '88s.
The interiors are virtually the same, save for upholstery choices.

Also the rear view mirrors are different even though they look the same.
Same goes for the front corner marker light lenses. They are different and so are the openings in the front fenders.
Easy way to tell the difference is when the grill gets less square and more slanted on the sides, my guess
is from late 85 up.
87 and 88 then have the larger, slanted headlights and late 88 even has a different steering wheel.
Interiors are about the same but the panel for the heater AC control is labelled different.
The entire front clip should interchange but in order change the slightly slanted grill for the early square type grill you will need to change the headlight buckets as well as the headlight brackets and bezels even though they look the same. Sometimes different parts were used even if they did not really match the year.

2WD drive tercels are quite different and the main thing is the gas filler on the left side.
