welcome, florykitty. cute name.
have you driven the car? when does the trans make noise? what kind of noise is it? we need as many details as possible to help you figure out where to investigate. it could be part of the clutch, or it could be internal to the trans. we'll have a better idea once we know more about the sound.

Re: transmision
hmmm. could be the clutch or pressure plate but only way to inspect them is to remove the engine or trans.
could still be internal damage to the trans or front diff too so i would clean off and open the fill plug (24 mm bolt just behind driver side CV axle on trans), then open all 3 drain plugs and drain the trans oil. there should be about 4 liters (or quarts) of oil in there. if it's low, it might have damaged the whole thing, or if you're lucky it might just need to filled up. try to put a course strainer between the trans and drain pan so you can strain out any chunks of metal from the oil. chunks will indicate heavy internal trans damage. also check the magnets on the drain plugs for chunks too. it's normal to find a metallic sludge on them, that is fine metal particles that wear off with regular use over time. if there is a huge pile of sludge, or chunks, then you should be concerned about the trans.

Re: transmision
sounds like clutch or throw out bearing, either way the trans has to come out. also have the check to see if the CV axles are in good shape or not, possible a bad boot would cause it operate dry. I drove one cross country with a dry CV joint, the further I drove it more it was squeaking, got worse and worse. Stopped at forum member's 4wdchico place on my way north and we change out the axle with a good used one from a parts car.

Re: transmision
check local wreckers for a good one, preferably with low miles. but first do some investigating to figure out what the problem actually is. diagnose first, fix second.florykitty wrote:any advice to buy 85 tercel 4wd manual transmision?any website?thank you

Re: transmision
deluxe has plastic seats and narrow trim, no tach. the SR5 has wide body trim, better fabric seats, and a tach on the instrument clusters. You also get those nifty "SR5" logos on the sides and on the rear soda dispenser license plate holder. on the "83-84 the SR5 also had the inclinometer, but not on the later north amearincan models.
Mechanically they are identical, if it is a manual 5 speed 4x4 transmission, than it will be the same as yours.
What kind of condition is the parts car? Is it worth finding a trans for it, or it is a rusty beater?
