max tire diameter variance for spare tire.

Post by just phil »

I was comparing all my tires as i run 185/65r14 studded winters
And the closest i have for a spare is the a tire with 0.42% diameter varience ie stock 175/??r13
I use 4wd daily. Wilk this cause a difficulty to shift in and out of 4wd?

you can use it in a pinch for short distances until you get the normal tire fixed. yes it will be difficult to get it out of 4wd, but the off road capability will be limited with one smaller tire anyway, it will not harm any thing if you only use off pavement for short distances. just treat it like one of those space saver spares, temp only. it keeps the rim off the roadway, that is all you need as a spare.

i think that should be fine but the best way to be sure would be to test run it with the spare on the car for a day and see. if it doesn't work, just put the winters back on and start looking for a matching-sized spare.

I vote for studded full-size spare on the roof rack.

OT, but upon seeing that spare well, I could not resist...
Some people found those wells to be quite handy in sneaking beer into a drive in way back when. The well had a drain plug which made emptying the resulting ice water easy.
Additionally, should beer be left over, the cops never thought to look there as it was covered by the rug. In retrospect, had I been a cop, I would have wondered why the spare was lying on the rug...

you can always leave the spare behind. with enough beer you will not care that you have a flat and no spare. it is just a matter of priorities, consider the beer will be far more useful for other "emergencies" than a spare tire.
