Speedometer jumped and is now reading slow

Post by Tercel__jon »

Started the car up, drove about two miles and the speedometer started jumping down until it finally settled around 25mph. I was doing about 55 at the time. After I left the store It jumped back up to about 40 a couple times but still stayed mostly around 25.

I just hope its not the 90* bend.

Alright. So it warmed up enough to crawl under there. I undid it from the 90* and gently pulled the cable. It came right out. Its the one that goes through the firewall.

that may not be the fault of the cable, sounds more like a problem with the speedo (time for a new one perhaps). cleaning and installing light weight grease on the cable could not hurt (be very careful to keep sand and grit off the greased cable when you install it).

I know this is a little late, but in my defense i havent been driving her lately. Speedo cable is broken in half. When i pulled it out you could see the frayed end. Stuck it back in for safe keeping and it worked! For about a month. Its not working again...but im not worried about it. Ill be getting a new cable next time i go to the yard. Thought id give closure here
