This is the one I removed. It is free if you come get it.
Atlanta GA, west side of town in a little burg called "Mableton" 30126
It had a grinding, wheezing, and a lot of slack in it, so it needs someone to take it apart and restore it before use.
I don't have the patience nor time to pack and ship. If you want to contract my son to do that, he will for a fee.
I cannot guess what the shipping would cost, but can use the packaging my replacement came with I reckon.
Have an A1 Day.

Do you still have this? I could use an extra, I know mine won't last forever.

Re: 1985 Tercel SR5 4WD Transmission
Well... the saga continues of the rugged yet indefatigable tercel the camel...
First trans: primary got jambled up, replaced with a $700 transmission from AZ
Second trans: secondary (4wd part) crapped out... got a nice used trans from Dallas
Third trans: this thing has holes in it my transmission guy wont touch! This transmission might be available
The plan:
Find a gasket to go between the primary and 4wd parts of the transmission and take the good parts from the first two, while I find out if the aluminum can be welded. If so, I have an extra transmission that "might" be good, but with the experience I have just had, I think I should keep it around just in case, or sell it with the car.
Thoughts on the gasket? who might have this, or should I just create one? what would be the best gasket material for this application?
I want to believe in the car, I want to drive it every day and take it for walks down by the river in the mud, but she is just really been very high-upkeep so far. Thinking about a divorce. 157k, 1985 SR5, Immaculate interior, everything works. Maybe including a spare transmission with a few holes. Pictures soon.

just use RTV for the gasket. i used it on a trans i took apart recently, worked great. also used it on the engine oil pan of my corolla recently and worked great there too.imgfx wrote:Thoughts on the gasket? who might have this, or should I just create one? what would be the best gasket material for this application?
i have lots of questions. what do you mean by "primary got jambled up", "secondary (4wd part) crapped out", and "this thing has holes in it my transmission guy wont touch!" i'm going to guess that you meanimgfx wrote:First trans: primary got jambled up, replaced with a $700 transmission from AZ

- the synchros were worn out on the first trans,
- something happened to the transfer case on the second (though i have no idea what could have happened—never heard of a t4 transfer case going bad yet)
- the third trans has seal leaks, or possibly even holes punched in it. (though leaky seals would be no big deal to replace)

Re: 1985 Tercel SR5 4WD Transmission
these transmission are generally pretty durable and it would rare you had so much bad luck. They do wear out eventually, but with care and proper survice I know of people that have put over 400k miles on them. So, unless you either ran it dry without the proper amount of gear oil in it, or you have mis-matched front and rear diff ratios, this should not be happening. Despite what the wrecking yard compatibility list says, the '83-84 and the '85-88 trans assembly are not interchangeable. They have different final drive ratios, if you mixed these up you would do a lot of damage to your drive train since the rear diff would not match the front diff ratio. You either have to swap the front diff or rear diff so they match if you get different year trans that have different gear ratios in them. Many mechanics screw this up without knowing it, damaging perfectly good transmissions in the process.
It is possible you received bad transmissions, but that many bad ones in a row seem unlikely, particularly since the transfer case blew out. I would suspect you have incompatible diff ratios front and back. Likely if you fix that problem, you will have a good reliable Tercel4wd.

Re: 1985 Tercel SR5 4WD Transmission
Thanks for all the comments. I have been very careful to only get exact replacements from 1985 cars so the ratios could not be a problem.
Yes,there are holes drilled in the tranny to drain the thing, probably a quick way to recycle so I am thinking...
I will get the parts pieced back together with RTV as suggested and get some pixs.
Location in the Atlanta area, west side of town. I would love to keep it but my wife is barking at me about the expense and trouble now. Since MAY 2013:

I think I have about $5000 in this car...I do not know what I want for it but I want it to live on and I will content myself with something less exciting. Maybe a Honda Civic wagon (which I also own).
