looks really nice on the outside but the ad says the interior is fair. they're pretty sporty but still get good mileage (if you're not a leadfoot). i'm not really into them personally so i would pass on it, regardless of price.

that is a great price, if it is as good as it looks. Those will see around here for as much as $5000 stock, and I have seen heavily modified ones go for much more.

I am going to go take a look at it tomorrow, if it is in good shape i will be selling one of my t4's to help recover some of the cash.

Re: 1988 gts is it worth it
that's really surprising. i frequently see them up here for $1000-$2000 in very good and stock shape. it seems like a lot of people bought them as something along the lines of the honda accord of the same era, just sort of a nicer daily driver rather than a sports car. which is kind of silly considering how powerful the 4age is.Petros wrote:that is a great price, if it is as good as it looks. Re: 1988 gts is it worth it
a good SR5 would sell for that, but the GTS verion with the 4age, 4 wheel disc brakes, and a number of other up grades, represents less than 1 percent of all corollas sold. So gets a good price. Still sought after by younger crowd.

So i went to look at the GTS and it was kinda rough not as advertised it ran good but just didn't have that unexplainable enchanting effect that a t4 has.
It was just another car that i started to dismantle in my head. Hummmm strut tower brace or maybe struts perhaps 4AGE.
I offered the guy 1,500 and he said he would hang on to it.

that's how i feel about them too, dan. they're just kind of another car. i want to like them because of the fanbase for the 4age but it really does nothing for me. i've learned that i don't care about power or speed. fuel economy and reliability are what get me excited. doesn't sound anywhere near as cool but whatever.

Re: 1988 gts is it worth it
i just came across this ad. it's a stock corolla gt-s, low km (just under 100,000 miles), in excellent condition. only $2100, and the ad has been up for 2 months. like i said, they don't seem to fetch too much around here. but if we needed a car, i would consider this one. it sounds like a really good deal.

That's in much better shape than the one I looked at.

Re: 1988 gts is it worth it
I bought a non-runner for $300 that was in decent shape but had well over 300k miles. the guy said he communed to work in and and got a remarkable 34 mpg mixed driving. It had been very reliable up until it quit, he thought the timing belt broke on it, it just stopped and would not restart. I thought it would be a easy fix but ended up trading it for an MR2 project (that I also never finished, sold it to synth).
this is the first year of the front wheel drive, not as sought after as the year before RWD GTS, but still a good performing car. Not sure if they are less desirable or go for less money than the RWD version, but it certainly a lot better looking car than the earlier RWD version. That one has a strange red interior that I do not think I have seen in the states, and that is a very different steering wheel that we have. All of the interiors I have seen in the USA are dark gray (charcoal gray).

Re: 1988 gts is it worth it
i was wondering if these GT-S were FWD or RWD but assumed they were FWD since the older ones all turn into drift cars while these seem to remain stock. i think i'd prefer the FWD, more weight on the drive wheels, and i agree, far more attractive. my dad has the same model of GT-S and it has the same red interior and steering wheel. i think the ones i've seen at the wrecker also had red interiors. i'm not wild about it. i like the seats though, lots of adjustability like in the sr5 tercs and 4runners.
i also came across this sr5 corolla.

i didn't realize until recently that the sr5's were the base model while the GT-S was the sporty one. i also noticed while at the wrecker the other day that these sr5s came with the carb'd 4AF engine. crappy! i wonder if they switched part way through production to the 4AFE. i really like the look of the sr5 wheels but they're just 13". too bad they weren't 14".
