even if this were true, it would not negate the fact that metric IS easier for millions of people in their daily lives.

being more comfortable with a system you're familiar with doesn't make that system superior. that's just path dependency, and it does not negate the value of other systems.
Petros wrote: It is very easy to make gross power estimate errors using the metric system as compared to the older units.
seems like lots of other countries use it without issue.

same as above, other countries seem to have no problem with this. and again, i think daily global use trumps specialized industrial use.

Petros - with respect. OK, I should have realised that this was a political issue in the USA (never any grey areas in these discussions) and obviously the more angrier you sound does not equal to your points being more objective - even though your argument is fraught with subjective analyses anyway (why isn't my foot exactly 30.48cm anyway - when this is a real world measurement?). But, it might be easier just to say "I've been bought up with the imperial system" (as I know what 55kw of raw Tercel power feels like) and "i'm politically opposed to the metric system" as I'm not sure that "pointy head" people are the enemy here I mean they did give us some pretty useful things like science and stuff. Pretty sure that NASA use metric as well. But what would they know? Probably forced on them by the freemasons while Kubrik was filming the fake moonlanding in a los angeles film set?

and also we do use Newtons when measuring torque and other force type measurements. Just not standing weight.

As for example the difference between the volume of a dry gallon and a wet gallon? I'd have no idea. But i'm sure learning that stuff is really handy in Liberia, Burma and the USA.

not political at all, just an observation. I am not even angry about it, for the majority of most people that use of metric system it is easier, I use it every day too, I grew up with it, and in engineering school we had to do calculations in both metric and traditional units. Our money was metric since the beginning long before the rest of the world used it.

But metric is just not better for all things. For complex calculations I will often us the old system, and than convert the answer at the end to metric. faster and lower risk of error. but when grabbing my sockets in a hurry, it is clearly far easier and faster to instantly know what the next size up is from the 12 mm, not always so with 1/2" socket.

the old system was something that evolved naturally out of need, the metric system was clearly designed, and it has some odd quirks because of it when doing complex energy calculations. In times past, doing a numerical analysis was always something only for a few educated specialists, most of the populations not that long ago could not even read or write, let alone do even simple mathematics. So it is no surprise that the more complex and arcane aspects of an analysis would be favored over the simple measurements, there were important reasons why those traditional units were kept and continue to be used, it is not just tradition nor familiarity. the metric system was forced to fit many of the already established mathematical processes, and the result is sometimes not entirely rational.

that still does not explain why half the world drives on the wrong side of the road however.
