Re: New member from Portland, OR - '86 Tercel Wagon DLX
Irowiki - I ended up using the KYB GR2 (Excel G). Part numbers 232005 and 232006. They are sealed assemblies so no worries about removing inserts.
But I attempted to install a repair kit on the carb last night in hopes of fixing some of my hesitation issues. Replaced the plungers, gaskets, and accelerator diaphragm. Did everything according to the FSM in terms of process and steps. Ended up spending almost 8 hours on it and it runs worse than before. Does the timing or anything need to be adjusted after removing and installing carbs?

When you say it "runs worse" what is it doing exactly?
Thanks for the part numbers, I'll look em up! Reused the factory springs I assume? Did you change the front struts?
How hard was the job overall, I haven't done any sort of strut work yet?

If you look at the pictures I posted, I did all new struts all around. Reused the factory springs "cut" to achieve the lowering affect I wanted.

Ah sorry, I just saw pictures of the blown rear struts, didn't catch you had done the front. Got the front part numbers handy too? Do they come with new mounts? Thank you btw!

As far as running worse, it has hesitation like before (give it throttle to accelerate and there's a big delay). But now theres also an issue to where there's no pedal travel from inside the car basically until the choke has warmed up a little bit. But it idles roughly and when getting onto the highway I have to floor it to keep moving but even then it accelerates at a snails pace. I managed to get it home from my friends place but I don't know how comfortable I'd be trying to get anywhere else around town.
Haven't checked the timing yet, does it need to be readjusted after installing a carb? I didn't think it did.

sounds like you are missing something on the carb rebuild; sounds like the choke linkage was not connected properly, and/or there is an o-ring that goes between the cover and the main body between the two barrels, it is easy to miss when assembling it. It will make it act like that if it was not installed. Sounds like it is too lean, without this o-ring it sucks too much air into the fuel metering system.
if you did not alter the distributor position, changing the carb will not affect the timing (you should not have to reset the timing). running too lean will cause it to ping and knock even when the timing is set correctly.

My friend and I were having issues with that linkage so that sounds right. We put it back in the way we took it out before, but it was stuck and the choke linkage wasn't moving at all. We played with the rod and changed the bend angle of it slightly, it seemed to fix all the issues but then it has that pedal issue now with the choke when it's cold.
And we probably also missed an o-ring when putting it back together. Man, it was certainly a learning experience though.

you can likely fix it, it is just a matter of being familar enough with it to know where all the parts go and how it is supposed to work. getting a good used carb to install is a good bet, than you will also have an example of a working one, so you can fix the other one and keep it as a spare.

That's the plan. A member is being very generous and hooking me up with a good used carb so I'll have this one to keep for parts and as an example.

Re: New member from Portland, OR - '86 Tercel Wagon DLX
So I replaced my bad wheel cylinder the other day on the rear left wheel and now my brake issues are gone. The cylinder had a bad leak and the bleeder valve was also completely stripped. Brakes have fresh fluid going through all the lines now and the brakes feel great.
Went and got an alignment today also and I was very surprised that despite how low I am, the alignment wasn't very far off from factory and was brought all back to within spec. No pulling and drives straight as an arrow.
Ordered a new blower motor and the carb I bought from a fellow member is arriving tomorrow.

Energy Suspension sway bar bushings installed yesterday. 21mm bushings fit fine on the 2WD Tercel.

looks sporty. how were the sway bar ends, collars, and end bushings? i've found that those are the components that are most prone to serious wear.

Those are all fine.
Installed the new carb today, runs MUCH better. However I still suspect my broken TVSV valve is causing some slight hesitation still. Looking for one if anyone has any good spares.

Re: New member from Portland, OR - '86 Tercel Wagon DLX
can you feel the difference on handling, ride or control with the new sway bar bushings? Is it worth doing?
With the tough PU bushings on the sway bar end (where it attached to the lower arm), it should improve handling further. the combination should be very noticeable.

It seems to turn very flat and feels very responsive and tight. Will give more feedback when I drive it more.
