1980 Tercel/Corolla 1A-C with 59,000 miles

Post by old blue jeans »

Anyone ever owned one of these? This is clean, but I wonder if the price is a total rip-off?

Just because a car has low original miles and is in great shape doesn't make it worth a ton of money. I think this is way too high of a price. Finding parts for these cars is getting harder all the time. Imagine what $8k can buy you as far as another car would go. I would say $3k is about max for that ride.

however nice, it is really really overpriced. it's a dealer though, surprise.

does it really have a 1a-c? i thought all first and second gens were 3a's. that's been my experience, anyway.

Yep, that's more or less what I thought (rip-off). Thanks for the confirmation. It is a 1A-C. I checked twice on the dealer site, because the engine is really what had me interested.

If you are really interested offer him what you think the car is realistically worth to you in cash no matter what the sticker price is. It is amazing what a car dealer will accept when cash is flashed. Make an offer with no extra numbers on top...all inclusive with your offer. Could be a really nice car. Test drive? $2300 cash? See what happens? Couldn't hurt, and is a cool little car.

Be sure to confirm that the recall fix has been done to the rear suspension - http://www.dealerrater.com/recalls/Toyota/TERCEL/#y1980
It's low-mileage and not in a "salt state," but still...
I liked that "numbers matching" line in the ad; you'd think it was a Porsche or Jaguar.

Yeah, a 1-AC engine was an option according to my repair manual for the 1st gens!

The 1.5 L 1A was produced between 1978 and 1980. All variants were belt-driven 8-valve counter-flow SOHC engine with a single, twin-barrel downdraft carburettor.

i just looked through all the pics on the dealer website and while i stand by my previous statement of it being way overpriced, i must say that it looks like the car is in amazing shape. that engine bay is sparkling.

Interesting, but waaay overpriced. It's certainly clean everywhere.
Since it is extremely low-mileage, has AC, but no radio - I'd bet it was a tow-behind or a summer-home car.

Oh wait, it does have Cards stickers on it. The selling point of the car, for sure. Go Cards!

I love it but wouldn't pay more than $1,500-2,000, even if it is in that good of shape!
