internally leaking carb?
Hey guys! My tercel leaks fuel down the inside of both barrels after I shut it off. What causes this? I notice my carbs fuel level shows even with upper notch of the sight glass running or not.

your fuel level sounds ok. as long as it's between the two notches of the sight glass, it's ok. i think the most likely cause is too much pressure in the fuel system, pushing the fuel out the easiest exit until that pressure has decreased. the most common cause of increased pressure in the fuel system would be a plugged charcoal canister. if it's plugged, the gas vapor has nowhere to expand to. easiest test is to disconnect the vapor line that runs from from the tank to the charcoal can. disconnect it at the can and let it vent to atmosphere for now and see if the jets still leak when the engine is off. if that fixes it, you just need to remove the charcoal can and clear it out with compressed air. sometimes they can get really stuck, in which case i have had good luck spraying carb cleaner in the stuck ports, letting it sit, and then blowing it out again. if it's really bad it can take quite a while but i haven't met one yet that wouldn't eventually give. just a note, spray some sort of penetrant on the bolts that hold the charcoal can in place before trying to remove them. they're tiny and usually rusted in place so i have found they are prone to shearing off.
the only other possible causes i can think of are a faulty needle valve in the float bowl, and the jets being loose. i think a bad needle valve would generally just cause rich running though, and loose jets would cause the same thing but also poor running. it also seems really unlikely that both jets would be loose at the same time unless someone had just replaced them, and done a poor job of it.

Re: internally leaking carb?
hi dlb! entirely possible plugged charcoal canister. when i 1st bought the wagon, its canister had a large hose that went to the carb and this hose was severed and melted shut at both ends. it always runs rich, makes my kids get sick. wish i could post pics of my current exhaust. someone hacked a piece of pipe in place of the cat converter with hose clamps. it leaks bad towards the front and back of the wagon. bought another stock exhaust but forgot to get air valve that comes off the cat and sits by the starter.

Re: internally leaking carb?
so the leaking turned out to be loose screws throughout the carb. the most loose screws were the ones holding the small venturies. got a hygrade carb kit from rockauto.com, cleaned up the carb and used as many new parts as i could. problem solved
