Is there much difference in the two engines? I need to get a new engine for my 85, and I heard they both fit.

Yes there is a difference of 8 and 12 hp. Depending on where you get the engine it can be a little more expensive like this quote I got from a local Japanese importer. They wanted three-hundred something for the 3A-C and $450 for the 4A-C. 4A-C are harder to get from importers or you get them from them reconditioned for the same price as K. Watanabe does. The 4A-C in the AE86 Corolla SR5 and the 83 AE71 Corolla have 70 hp. The 4A-LC in the Chevy Novas, 87-88 Corolla FX, the AE82 Corolla have 74 hp.

I was going to go to Reseda Engine. They quoted me a 3ac for I think $675 installed. If there's only 8 hp difference, I think i'll go with that

Look at my post under parts about the Delco remanufactured 4AC long blocks for $315. I made my choice, and have one in the back of my Tercel.

BTW, the 4AC has about a 20% power advantage over a 3AC.

I belive the numbers are a bit different, but mostly I can say there is a difference from having had bolth a corolla fx and driving a tercell hatch (not the wagon I own now) I assume they are similar in weight, maby the tercell is even a bit lighter. the 4ac seemed to have noticibly more tourque when compared with the 3ac in there respeective 2 door hatch versions, the fx was also geared higher, and it still felt torquer. it also ran smoother, and had alot less problumes than I'm experiencing with the 3ac in my tercell 4wd. of course I bought bolth of these cars in the 130k range, so who knows what was done to them befour I owned them. just my 2 cents.
