Your original (!) O-ring idea sounds pretty good! Maybe "lock" it in place on the outside with a couple dabs of carefully-placed J-B Weld?
Before, though, I'd take the removed seal to an "oldfashioned" parts store and see if it would have something to match - couldn't be too expensive to try.

Huh, I wasn't actually going to remove the old seal but was going to place an o-ring between the factory seal and the washer that goes between the seal and the arm. I was thinking that the factory seal would still play a part in keeping the gear oil in. Once it's out I would be screwed if the o-ring didn't work. If anyone else is brave enough to remove their seal and replace it with an o-ring then let me know how that works out. I'm gonna try it with the seal still in.
Should I still use a little pematex with the o-ring?

So, without getting into a project at all I just slid under the car today just to see if the shift shaft seal was actually leaking from the string repair because I can definitely smell gear oil. Turns out the string seal job worked just fine. The smell must be residual oil that was on the exhaust or casing. Sweet...looks all good. I will keep the o-ring fix on the back burner for a future possible fix.
