shifter cup bushing replacement?

Post by dlb »

i'm trying to replace the 'cup' or 'seat' bushing that the large ball of the shifter sits in. the cup bushing is held in place by two small metal cylinders that look like they were punched into place. you can see them clearly in this photo.

how do i get them out? i've tried bashing them out with a punch but it's an awkward angle and i've only succeeded in deforming them so far. my next thought was to drill them out, tap threads, and replace them with small bolts, but i thought i'd check in here first.

The cups flex. Just pry out with a skinny screwdriver. Leave the guide pins alone! Since they have deformed slightly, check clearance on the ball slots before reassembly.

I also fill the shift box with gear oil and pack the area above shifter ball/under boot with grease.

oh hell. looks like i need a new 'retainer,' as it looks like that's what it's called. does anyone have a manual trans that can be cannibalized for parts?
