Hi guys, I don't mean to sound so ignorant, but here's another question:
yesterday I was checking the fluids in my terc, and I noticed this pipe coming out of the side of my engine. The end of it is just open, and I'm wondering what it is, and if some hose is supposed to be connected to it. The pipe is the one the arrows are pointing to in the pictures:

Thanks guys!

I've never seen that before. What does it connect to on the other side?

I'm willing to bet that it links to the cat. My 86 had one but I nixed it when I did the engine swap. You'll have to just deal I think unless you swap cats to the one without the breather-thingy. Don't fret if it is attached to the cat. Just part of emissions if I am not mistaken.

The pipe is sort of S shaped, with the end being the top of the S. the other end just goes into the bottom of the engine block. I just thought it sort of unusual to have an open ended pipe in there. :)

I think I have one of those on my '83....thought it was a bit strange myself. Thought it might be some kind of counter-balance...but isn't heavy enough.

Does it have anything to do with the drain cog for draining coolant from the block? Maybe it routes the coolant away from the block so it will actually drain into a container instead of dripping down the side of the engine?

Well, I'm in classes right now, I'll see if I feel any air when it is on this afternoon. Interesting idea that it might be a drain for the coolant.

The pipe is the air intake for the cat. Fed emision cars have a 2 stage cat. The pipe runs through a filter near the starter then through a reed valve that prevents exaust comming back up. I think it is up inside the engine compartment to keep water and mud out.

...might be right...my Cal version doesn't have it...the Fed parts car did. Thought I saw it on mine...didn't.

Thats what I originally said. My 86 is a Fed, the 84 is a CAL. Of course, now there is a FED car in the CAL body. Who cares. lol. hehehe
