'83 tercel for parts/repair

Post by jebudallaha »

Hey All Tercel4wd'ers out there,
Unfortunately my Tercel threw a rod the other day, wrecking the engine block (unless engine blocks are supposed to have skylights.... :P ). I don't have time to get a new engine and install it, so it either needs to get scrapped (it would break my heart to see it scrapped) or go to a nice home where it can be of use to someone; I would keep it myself but I don't have the space.

6speed manual transmission is in good condition and generally the body isn't half bad (just a little surface rust and general aging and broken mirror). Radiator is about a year old, as is the alternator (refurbed unit). Starter is on it's way out though. 4 new tires with less than 6 (~6k) months of driving. Has a pretty bitchin' rack too (not really, but it's a rack non-the-less)

Car is in Portland, OR.

Since tercel4wd.com has been a great resource for me, and you all have the same appreciation for this wonderful car, I thought I'd offer it up to you guys and see if anyone has any need for it. It will need to be towed. Scrapper is offering me $200, but would rather it go to someone who will use it for parts or what have you. If there is anyone interested, drop me a note and make me an offer. Could be free to the right person (let me know why you're the right person), otherwise I'd like to get some money to cover the tires a little bit. Have a clean title in hand. If there aren't any takers in a few weeks, I'll have to reluctantly have it towed to the scrapper; please don't let that happen!

As a side note: Anyone selling a tercel?????? (haven't been able to pin one down through the usual methods that's in my area).

before sending it to scrapper take the tranny out
they will probably still give you 200 for the car
then sell me the tranny for 200 more
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

also pull the inclinometer if you have it scrapped. it only take a few minutes and they usually sell for $50 but you could probably ebay it for $100.

of course, it would be better if someone bought the whole car and saved it. sounds like it's well worth it.

xirdneh, you can have to whole car for $200 if you want to deal with it; heck I might let it go for less if you let me keep the inclinometer (was going to pull it if I scrapped it as a memento). I just don't have time to pull the tranny.

Xirdneh, take a running engine to Portland with an assistant, swap the engine and than drive both back, you should be able to do it in a weekend. I would do it but I have 4 Tercel4wd on my property right now, way over my limit!

I will have one for sale soon, an '84 auto trans in good shape. It came from California, it was Tercel4wdrules project car that I have completed. Lot of new part and in great shape.

You are correct, engine blocks are not supposed to have skylights. Discovered this the hard way shortly after I bought my 1959 MGA back in 1969. It wasn't supposed to have one either.

I am interested in the transmission. I am in Atlanta so it would have to be pulled and sent.
Let me know what it would take to get it.

you're gonna need the rear diff too ('83's had 3.73 gears- '86's had 4.10 gears.)
if it aint there, there's a good chance it won't break!
83 SR5 Silver/Blue (Snowmobile/work beater)-totaled but drivable
85 SR5 Blue
88 SR5 White (the 'good' one)-not anymore-totaled
87 fwd silver wagon a/t
87 4wd dx Cream (a/t- not anymore- now m/t)

If the front differential assembly and housing are still good on his old trans, he can also pull the front diff/bell housing off his current transmission and install it on the older trans assembly. Just make sure you clean out any metal deposits from when the old trans gave up. Also, the connectors will be different, both will have the back up light switch, and the 4wd light switch, but the early ones do not have an "extra low" (EL) indicator. No great loss, I always thought the EL indicator light was silly, as if you need a light to tell you you are in extra low gear.

if the front diff is bad, than you will need to install the rear diff so your front and rear final drive match.
