I have recently pulled a complete running 3ac out of a Tercel that is getting a 4age swap. The engine is complete with manifolds, carburetor, fuel pump and all attached emissions control system, ready to install.
I have driven it about 100 miles before I pulled it from the car, it runs well with no noticeable smoke. the compression is between 150 and 155 on all cylinders. It was pulled from a 1987 Tercel4wd, however it appears to be an imported crate engine, it is not original to this car. so mileage is unknown however it runs good. Also, it has the earlier style valve cover that has the embossed "Toyota" across the top.
How about $350? You pick it up, or I might consider local delivery in Puget Sound area. I can crate it and ship it in the USA for about $200 or so (ground freight), I need to verify current shipping prices for your location.

Re: Complete good running 3AC for sale
That is a great deal Petros. You can figure that thing won't be around long if you are advertising it. So far the info that you have provided and your experience in the automotive field should make anyone comfortable buying an engine from you.
What are you pulling the 4age out of for the swap? Are you going with Larry's install proceudres or do you have some other custom thoughts?
Peace

Re: Complete good running 3AC for sale
I bought the 4age off of CL, it came out of an 85 collorlla GTS (rwd) that some kid wrapped around a tree. I am rebuilding it now. this is a much easier engine to adapt than larry's 20-valve since it was orignally for a rwd installation, all the external parts swap over without issues and I only need to make a custom exhaust and an altered flywheel (I might borrow larry's idea of cutting down the 4age flywheel rather than altering the 3ac flywheel).
this 3ac engine should be a good engine for many miles to come, I would otherwise keep it but I have no desire to store it in my otherwise crowed garage. So if someone can use it I am happy to sell it.

Petros, How do you tell if an engine is a crate engine?

Re: Complete good running 3AC for sale
mostly by the designation, the 3acv for example was a Japan domestic market only. Also, there are some details that are often different from what was installed in the Tercel, so often these can be assumed to be crate engines. I saw one once with a totally different timing belt cover, screws in different places, and some differences in the valve cover (the embossed "Toyota" was in a different style and faced the other direction than on the '83-84 Tercels, never seen that in any US market Toyota). Also, the valve cover is plain on the '85 and newer Tercel 3ac, so if you have an '83-84 Tercel with out the "toyota" on the valve cover, it is at least a replacement engine, and visa-versa, but you do not know the origin of the engine unless you check the block serial number. though it is a pretty good bet it is an imported engine if it was not original, it is far cheaper to buy a crate engine than to do even a simple rebuild yourself.

Thanks Petros, I have seen several different valve covers and stickers on various engines. What are crate engines worth these days?

Re: Complete good running 3AC for sale
Most of the importers would get a flat rate of about $400 for any 4 cylinder engine with a warranty and usually delivered, which is usually cheaper than rebuilding one yourself. the problem with the 3a is it has been out of production for so long they are generally not available, and even if they could find good ones in japan, there is not much of a market for them here. There have been some stories of the few still available have been sitting around so long that you have to check the cylinders out for rust, replace all the seals, etc.
Though I think if you intend to keep the car for a long time I would still do my own rebuild and do a few tweaks to it to make it better, and get a bit more power out of it too.

Re: Complete good running 3AC for sale
Just happened upon this thread while thinking about replacing the 320k mile 3ac in my '85 that has been producing progressively worse knocking noises. If you ever have another engine available, I'd love to drive over from N idaho and come back with a new set of horses
