thanks again, dlb. the trans plug was much easier. I got it all put back together just a few minutes ago, it starts right up. sounds nice.
and yes, the headliner was nasty. much better now. I used a product called blue coral.
I wasn't expecting to get this far into an interior restoration, but the farther I got the worse it was so by the time i'm done now it'll be completely refurbished inside. in addition to having the 4a under the hood.
I'm also laying up a carbonfiber/fiberglass hood at my work because mine is peppered with rust and falling apart. after that i'm looking at rims. then suspension.
good grief.
it's just a side project so it may take a while. but it gets amazing mileage compared to my supercharged 4runner 8)
thanks so much again for all the help. maybe I'll start a "build-thread" in the gallery section to document all the progress..

I'm not familiar with the story behind wavy vs straight valve covers. enlighten me?
The later 4A-C engines had a wavy valve cover instead of the straight ones in the 3A-Cs and earlier 4A-Cs. Japanese 3A engines also came with the wavy valve cover, most notably the 3A-SCV. I don't remember the reason behind it, but it might have been discussed elsewhere onn the forums.

a carbon fiber hood? i would like one of those please! but make so it will have about an inch more clearance from the engine, I figure a slight bow in it so as to not distort the looks too much, that way I can fit my 4age swap in without having to cut a hole in the hood.

I'm sure you did this, but if not...
Did you use a gasket under the EGR block-off plate? When I made mine back in '08, I did not and had a slight vac leak. So I just stuck a new gasket on and it's been fine ever since. You could prob reuse the old one.
