Oh, I'm just going to buy the bolt tonight, either from a fastener place or NAPA for $3

Alright, plugged the EGR and there's still some sort of a leak, so I poured some oil down the carb and fooom, huge cloud of oil smoke out of the engine! I could not tell where from as I was looking out the back when it happened (and it was dark). Also could not get it to generate a "little" smoke, it refused to smoke until I poured enough in for the huge cloud!

I can't seem to figure out where it is coming from by feeling around, it seems to be coming from all over (or under) the manifold.

She's also running rougher when cold, cold starts seem to chew through a bit of oil now (since I removed the cat) or maybe it is running rich for some reason. There's also what I think is backfiring when I back off the gas off of cruising. Also some hesitation in the lower end. Related at all?

Is it possible the exhaust manifold is cracked, or should I be looking at something else (valves?). Funny thing is the volume level of the car is almost back to normal too!

could be the exhaust manifold, could just be the gasket between it and the head. you'll have to pull it off to inspect both.

Okay, bear with me here, can the exhaust manifold be removed without removing the intake manifold or do I have to do both?

If I have to do both I'll probably wait until the carb replacement.

Have you got a friend holding a rag over the tailpipe to help find the leak? Sometimes that extra back pressure makes the leak easier to find. If you do this before everything gets too hot, you can try spraying soapy water over suspected joints.

Both manifolds come off together.

Interesting, in that case there may be more bolts I missed! I'll have to go back and make sure everything is tight.

On a sliding scale, I'm guessing the manifold gasket going would have happened before the manifold cracked? I may pick up a manifold at the pull a part this weekend anyway, they go for $22.99 each.

Does this look famillar to you guys? The holes look like they match up. (see attachment)

Does the brand of gasket matter? This looks good:

that looks right. i wouldn't get it until you've got the manifold off and know what you actually need though.

Oh? I figured taking it off would nuke the gasket.

no, they are not paper gaskets. they are metal and can be reused if still in good shape.

if you have the carb off, removing the intake/exhaust manifold together fast and easy, you do not even have to unbolt the head pipe. They are bolted together so the intake manifold is heated by the exhaust manifold, so they have to come off together. it is rare this gasket goes bad, it is more common for some of the bolts to work loose. You can reach most of them from under the exhaust manifold with an open end wrench (a mirror helps you see them better from above). Cracks in the manifold also occur, but is less common than on other models of toyotas.

Again, make sure you diagnose the problem before you waste time and money to fix it.

After some digging through manuals, I may have found the source of the leak, apparently the air suction system on my tercel piped air from the air filter to the exhaust manifold, a connection somewhere underneath. Of course, that system was removed by a PO. Sure enough, I can feel quite a large leak underneath, but I'll need to wait until I can get a camera on it to be sure.

Also seems my heat control valve is bad, and I suppose it could be leaking too!

Oh boy did I find it.

The AS system connected to the #3 side of the exhaust manifold, and now there is a big hole there.

I think it is 29 millimeters, because there's some rather large plugs on the #4 side of the manifold that match.

Edit; got out my metric six point socket set my dad gave me and it is a 30 millimeter thing that used to have an Air Suction pipe attached to it.

I'm not sure I'm going to be able to find a 30 millimeter bolt...
