front swaybar brackets

Post by imgfx »

Hello:
I seek some front swaybar brackets.
Image
I would like some good bushings too, but should buy new ones.
Does anyone have a good source that is less than $80 for rubber bushings? I keep running into "Rare Parts" pricing BS.

Suggestions for aftermarket also welcome. Have not found a match online yet. Tried MR2 size, didn't work. Will Corolla (year?) work?
What other cars would have used this part? I have a ton of junkyards around but the dudes running them have no way to cross reference.
The cross reference numbers in the guide here are a bit confusing without some idea as to what the columns mean explicitly. Any one have insight into those columns?

Backstory:

I had a tercSR54wd ten years ago and the motor quit so I quit it. I have regretted that ever since.

I am officially the second owner. I found this 155k 1985 tercSR54wd in craiglist and called the post 2 minutes after it went up. Got it. It had been dragged behind a motorhome it's whole life, maybe the reason one brace was missing entirely and the other was cracked and dodgy. Yes, has a front attached tow bar, so I can bring it along with me if I need it.

I am taking the excellent advice to replace all the bushings in this for safety. I intend on driving the car forever everyday. I am even open to replacing the entire swaybar assembly with a new kit. Who makes them? I have seen kits for other tercels, is this the same as the hatchback?

My wife thinks I am crazy. At this point. We will prove her wrong and win her over!

Example from the thread in which you originally posted:
# 48815-16090 Strut bush to X-member 2 @ $10.72 = ..21.44__(Toy calls the stabilizer a "strut"*, AKA swaybar) <<<<<<<<<<
The first series of numbers is the official Toy part number - next is the part description - next is the # needed and the unit price - last is the total for # needed.
The price for the four bar-end bushings and two X-member bushings was $55 in 2007, per the OP in the other thread.
The only AM bushings you will find online are for the two bar-to-X-member bushings.

Also - look at the other thread for more info.

those metal brackets are the same for all second gen tercels, '83-86 and wagons til '88. Any wreking yard with a '83-86 Tercel should have what you need. There are several in the local yard here.

you can buy polyurethane bushings for the Tercel from this site: http://toyheadauto.com/PerformancePages ... Tercel_4x4_

Some of the bushings are the same as the MR2, some are similar and some are not. The steering rack rubber mounts are the same, and you can get polyurethane bushings for it too. The stiffer polyurethane does improve handling but if you replace all of the rubber parts with polyurethane you will make the ride more harsh and it will transmit more road noise to the passengers. Replacing just the sway bar end bushing (where they connect to the lower arms) is a good idea. And make sure all the other bushings are in good condition or replace them. Good shocks and struts, good ball joints and tire rod ends, and it should improve handling and ride comfort. Going to a lower profile tire with wider 14" wheels (rather than the stock 13") so you end up with the same rolling dia. will also improve handling as well.

imgfx, i would actually go with used bushings for the brackets which you are seeking. they are ridiculously overpriced to buy new, and i have never seen those bushings wear out. i think they only way they would die is from damage, or maybe if the car made it to 1,000,000 km or miles or whatever. i suggest just getting the used bushings and brackets together from someone on the forum, or a wrecker.

the reason the bushings at the sway bar ends are prone to wearing out is that the end of the bar flexes with every turn. that up and down motion eventually wears the end bushings down so they need to be replaced with new (or good used ones) but the bar-to-body bushings see very little action and should live as long as the car so used ones are generally a safe and far cheaper bet.
