Sears has been under enormous pressure (in all product areas) from Walmart in particular and Target/Home Depot/Lowes in general to keep lowering prices.
That is the real reason to drive manufacturing off-shore.
The mindless consumer is just as much to blame as anyone else. Sometimes the better made, non chinese product, is cheaper.
