Okay, so my bearings in my driver side rear wheel just went for the second time. The first time was a catastophic failure and it messed up the axle and all. I can change my own brakes and I put new springs and shocks in the rear of my car, but a press I do not have so I had to get some one else to do this job. Well that was back in the fall, and I have driven about 6,000 miles since then and the bearing went again last week. My mechanic ( different mechanic from the first joc) told me that the case for the bearings is shot, which means replacing the entire rear axle housing. Is this the only option if the race is shredded? If i get the housing from a pick apart how involved is it to replace? Is it worth it if I don't take apart the rear differential? What should I look at on the new rear housing? What else should I replace while I have the whole rear end taken apart? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Banjo Kayaker
PS- I remember finding a link to dealer of coild springs who had all kinds of choices of spring strength. Any ideas where it is?

My Mechanic just switched the whole rear transmission from my old car onto the new from the gearbox back including the rear driveshaft and so forth.
He seemed to think this was the easiest way to do it he just attached it up to the new cars brake lines and linkage points and suspension without opening the dif (make sure you get a similar years dif. though as there are ratio diferences)

Easiest to look for an entire rear axle with same ratio...doubt if a parts place would sell the housing alone anyway.
Best price from someone parting one out?
Could check here for the price wanted by the recyclers.....

I've swapped a rear end before in a Toyota Starlet.takza wrote: Easiest to look for an entire rear axle with same ratio...doubt if a parts place would sell the housing alone anyway.

Things to be careful of:
- Remember that you will probably be dealing with some rusted/siezed bushings, this means you'll probably have to cut some things apart and buy new bushings.
- Make sure the new axle comes with good brake lines, or you'll have to transfer the brake lines from your old one. This can be a pain in the ass, because brake lines on old Toyotas are often somewhat rusty and don't take well to being messed with. You might have to just install new brake lines.
- Before buying the new axle, check for play in the differential. Also, rotate the hubs and listen for grinding of bearings. Push/pull the hubs and make sure the bearings have no play. Look for leaks at the diff input seal and axle seals. Pull the drain plug and look at the oil and amount of crap on the magnet.
- You'll probably have to swap the brake components from your old axle to the new one. I tried not doing this, and the slave cylinders started leaking right away.
- When you have the new axle assembled and ready to go into your car, take the time to paint it with a tremclad or some other rust inhibiting paint. Especially paint your new brake lines to prevent rust.
I found it to be a lot of work to swap a rear end, but I guess it all depends on what you have to do to the new one you get.
Have fun!
