Redline on 3AC?

Post by irowiki »

Would anyone with a tachometer be able to tell me what the redline is? I'm buying a tach for mine, and it would be nice to know for reference. I found max power at 4800, so I just need the redline!

I did a few searches but that mostly just brings up redline oil. Thanks!

Below is factory tach from two different year style, '83-84 instrument cluster, and '85-87 style. both show 6000 rpm.

I have run mine unintentionally to over 7000 rpms without harm, I was going up a steep icy road with the studded snow tires that slipping and gripping alternately. RPMs were reving way up and than bogging down, I could not shift or I would have come to a stop. I was trying to keep the car moving and the car in the middle of the road, I glanced down at my tach it was peaking at over 7000 rpms. No damage done, but I would not recommend it. The low end on these engines is used on other model engines, including the MR2, and it red lines at 7200 rpm. What happens is the valves start to bounce and float on their seats and not follow the cam, on this car you will loose power when that happens. On some cars this will result in the valves hitting the piston, and than destroying the engine. But the 3a engine is a clearance engine and no such damage occurs, the real reason not to go above 6000 rpm is that there is no power up there, torque peaks at about 3000 rpm, and hp at about 4800, above that the power drops off. the purpose of the tach when performance driving is to shift when the rpm in the new gear falls to about where the max torque (about 3000 rpm). this depends on the gear spacing in the trans and your speed, rear end ratio etc. but going above 4800 rpm harms nothing if the engine is in good condition.

I'm so jealous of your trip odometer (well, also the built in tach).

Thanks a bunch for the pictures and info!

you might see if you can adapt one of these SR5 cluster to your car, the speedo cable, fuel sender and temp sender should work the same with this cluster as with your stock one.
