Bad inner CV axle joint check....TURTCEL

Post by TURTCEL »

So I just read a post from 2004 about bad CV axles. It stated that a clunking on accelertion and deceleration indicates a possible problem with the inner cv joint. How would I check this for sure?

This is the exact symptom that I have.

by checking for rotational play, ie jacking up a front corner and spinning the tire while the trans is in gear. i've found that there is always a substantial amount of rotational play even with new half shafts though so i've had no luck using this test as an indicator of a bad joint. i've found the best indication of a bad joint is to accelerate hard while turning in each direction. if you get a rhythmic clunking while turning left, your right joint is hooped, reverse for the other side.

I've always used the large parking lot test. find a parking lot (no deviders ) turn the wheel all the way to the stop and accellerate if the axel is bad they generaly will click , turn the other way and do same thing. the way your turning will be the bad axel, the wheel that is making the tighest radius is the bad joint .

i always thought it was the outside axle that was being tested by having the increased load on it. i could very well be wrong though. why would the inner axle click or clunk with decreased load on it?

Sometimes you can hear which side is clunking on the turn to help differentiate which axle it is.

There is no clunking while turning, just while decelerating or accelerating on a straight stretch. Just a single clunk when I hit the gas and just a single clunk when I let off the gas. Those are the only times when it happens.

i still suggest checking your strut mounts. after your clutch, you should prob take a breather though! "all work and no play..."

You mentioned this before DLB about the strut mounts. It would have been a perfect time to check them when I had everything apart for the clutch job. Didn't even think about it. I will get to that soon.

Today I am taking my dog to the hills to go hiking and get TURTCEL out out on the dirt raods. A day of R&R is necessary for sure.

I agree...all work and no play makes Johnny a dull boy.
