86 Transmission Kit
Have 1986 SR5 4WD and it is stuck in 4th gear. Maybe a shift fork or who really knows until you look inside. Anyway need help finding a rebuild kit for this 1986. Any direction much appreciated.

Re: 86 Transmission Kit
Welcome to the list!
these companies below list kits for your trans (Toyota no longer sells trans parts for this car, except perhaps seals). they are still available but not everyone that says they have them really do, so call and check first. You have the Z50F trans.
I have had the same linkage issue on two different Tercel4wd, once it was because the shift forks wore out and than broke up, doing other damage (I replaced that trans). Another time the linkage was worn and sloppy and allowed the linkage to pop out (that one I rebuilt). either way the trans has to come out and get pulled apart. the trans is a straight forward rebuild, use the FSM link from this forum to get the instructions (read it very carefully). You will need a couple of circlip pliers and pullers, and a light press or a very large vise; otherwise normal tools will be all you need. Be careful, a few of the parts have reverse thread to unscrew, again check the FSM. Also, use a circlip pliers to remove the clips, the idiot who wrote the manual apparently has never tried the procedure he wrote to remove them, it says to put two screw drivers on the ends and whack them with a mallet. It will not work, some narrow circlip pliers will however. The only real trouble is this is a six speed trans with a transfer case, so there are a lot more parts than on a typical 4 or 5 speed. It is usually cheaper to replace the trans, if you can find a good one (not easy as this car ages, all of the wrecking yard trans are just as old and many are junk). Good luck.
