Re: Drivers Side CV Boot is toast...
Here in BC I have paid over $100 for front bearing and seals. Very expensive in my mind. That's why I made my own tool to press them in myself.

In case anyone was interested here is where I'm at price wise
Advance $60 each but with the $30 discount and free shipping on orders over $75... I paid $98 for two and that includes tax
Rock Auto $4.18 for the seals ( each side ) With shipping it was basically $12
$ 98 ( Bearings ) x two
$ 12 ( Seals ) x two
$ 110 ( Total )
If I can get someone local to press them in for free or for around $10 each side I'll be happy..

haha, those prices are pretty good but i'd bet you won't find anyone willing to work for free. hope for the best but expect the worst. my bet is $60-$70 to have them press all the bearings in/out.scouttster wrote:If I can get someone local to press them in for free or for around $10 each side I'll be happy..

Re: Drivers Side CV Boot is toast...
Went to the Industrial Park to cash in my Aluminum cans and scrap copper I had.. Poked around the various repair shops and went to one guy that quoted me $60 each side.. Went to another guy and he quoted me $20 per side.. Nice, and his press is only 2 months old.. So, I'm at $150 for new bearings for the front ( Both sides )
Here is my cost break-down for the car if anyone happens to be interested:

Re: Drivers Side CV Boot is toast...
that's an excellent tercel cost breakdown, scouttster. i'm dumbstruck at people that spend tens of thousands of $$$ on new cars because i really don't know how they justify that cost to themselves—shiny paint? no problems for a few years, THEORETICALLY? they figure it's cheaper than maintaining an older car? i don't know, but to me the cost of new cars far outweighs the benefits.

Re: Drivers Side CV Boot is toast...
That is why I keep fixing my Tercel, it is always cheaper than replacing it. I shudder at what people tell me they pay for routine maintenance costs, they take their new car in for a "tune-up" and pay over $800 for an oil change, a system scan, a sensor or two replaced, new air filter, etc. That is more than it cost me to rebuilt my whole engine! They spend $1600 for a brake job! I guess they figure if they have to pay $25,000 for a new car, than spending $3000 a year for maintenance is to be expected. NOT ME! I will NEVER buy a new car again, ever.
Hey Scouttster, where did you get a new radiator for only $55? Or was it used from a wrecking yard?

Petros-
Got the radiator from a company called " Automotive Cooling " off Ebay ( 99.6% positive rating )
And, I actually paid $52 with free shipping. They are out of Miami. 1-888-305-0030
Its a brand new radiator.. Made in China crap.
All aluminum with the somewhat heavy black plastic over and under. Its been in the car 8 mos, no problems yet.
UPS coming with my bearings today - says " out for delivery " ( seals came yesterday ) I got the steering knuckle and hubs off the car and out this morning. Drivers side was terrible. Passenger not as bad.

Re: Drivers Side CV Boot is toast...
That is a great price for a radiator no matter where it is made. I have seen the all aluminum radiators, looks like it saves a lot of weight. I got a near new one from a wrecking yard but I have not installed it, have it as a spare.
Sometimes on the large bolts that have not been remvoved in a long time (or sometimes never), it is best to soak them with penetrating oil over night. ATF is the best penetrating oil ever, I keep a jug of used AFT around just to remove rusted nuts and bolts. Keep it off the rubber however.
