Thanks, I have searched for a trans locally for the past three months and no luck, I also have other projects that I need to fund.

List member Danzo has a good trans for sale and he is not far from Dallas. A clean Tercel4wd in good running condition is worth $2500-3000. but without a good trans it is not nearly worth $1500, closer to $400-500. It is the most critical part of these cars, it is the only car Toyota made that uses this type of transmission.

Get the trans from Danzo and install it in an afternoon, with a new clutch if necessary, than you can get top dollar for it. Use the money to fund your other projects. It will sell fairly fast at a high price if in good running condition. You would be lucky to sell it at all with a blown trans, and I can not see anyone paying nearly that much for it as-is.

like petros mentioned above, a rust and dent free t4 in excellent working order usually seems to fetch about $3000, more or less.

forum member xirdneh actually did a full write up on manual trans removal and installation. here's the link.

It's a nice car. If you put the new trans in, make sure that the rear differential matches the new final drive if it's not the 3.73:1, which is what should be in the rear diff.

If your front diff is in good shape you can swap out the front diff/bellhousing assembly (all one unit) on to the new trans if the gear ratio is different. '83-84 has the 3.73:1 diff ratio (front and rear), and the '85-87 has the 4.10:1 diff ratios. You can interchange the trans, but you must match the front and rear diff ratio by either swapping out the rear diff or the front diff so it matches the other.

I'm picking up a 85 transmission this weekend, I'm going to swap the rear third member to match, Does anyone have the the list of cars that use the 4.10 rear end gears?

I will be putting the car up for sale again after i go through the whole car and fix any issues that might come up, This time in 100% driving condition.

4.10's came in the '85-'88 Tercs. The '83-'84 had the 3.73's.

I have a parts '87 4wd that has a 4.10 rear end. I would be willing to sell the rear 3rd member but obviously shipping from Idaho to Taxes...I mean Texas might be a little spendy.

PM me if interested and we can try and figure something out.

rotorholic, count the teeth in the rear diff just to make sure it's not already a 4.1. it has happened many times that previous owners have already replaced the transaxle, rear diff, or both, with the non-stock gear ratios so you should check first. might save you some extra work.

i can't remember how many teeth are on each diff but do a search on here and you'll find it.

Count the ring gear teeth and divide that by the pinion gear teeth, that will gice you your confirmed ratio. Also, I have read that 4.1 geared diffs have stamps on the ring gear stating 4.1 but the earlier 3.73's were not stamped. Definitely confirm it though.

this is true for every rear diff I have examined, at least six of them. all the 4.1 were stamped, none of the 3.73 were not, right on the edge of the ring gear where you can see it after wiping off the oil.
