Greetings all. I've owned my '86 SR5 4x4 since '93 but I've never been to your site before today. What a great place!
I'm in need of some replacement seatbelts for front driver and passenger. Any suggestions on where to find them. Dealer? Aftermarket?
Also, the two front windows require quite a bit of effort to roll up. Is this a simple lube fix or should I be in the market for some replacement parts?
seatbelts and window cranking
The seatbelts should be a fairly easy find at the junkyard. If you don't have access to a good junkyard, I can probably pick up seatbelts for you.
As for the window regulators, I just worked on mine last week. If you catch the problem early, you can lube the mechanisms and the rubber channels themselves and get things working smoothly. If you let them go too long, the drag can cause parts of the regulator to bend slightly, which lets the window slide crooked in the channel, which can then allow the glass to separate from the mount. It's not a lot of fun to have the glass just drop into the door, and a lot less fun to try to correct the problem afterwards. I've had to replace a few regulators over the years in the 6 Tercels I've owned, because previous owners let them get to that point.
While you're in the doors lubing the window mechanisms, pay attention to the hardware for the locks and door handles as well. It's amazing the difference a little oil or grease can make to the smoothness and ease of opening the doors.

Thanks for the replies clbolt and 3A-C Power.
I'm in Seattle and when I called a local junkyard they said they didn't sell seatbelt equipment for liability reasons, so I assumed the others were the same. Based on your experience, I'll try others. If I have no luck, I'll check back here and see whether we can arrange a deal on the seatbelts that either of you have. Anybody have suggestions for good junkyards in the Seattle area?
My problem with the seatbelts is that the pretensioners (if that's what you call them) don't work anymore so the seatbelt won't draw back into the base unit. As a result, the belt flops around when its not clicked in. One time, I closed the door on the plastic part and broke it. I'm pretty sure that means my seatbelts are not working as they should safety-wise, so I'm going to get on that pretty quick. Anybody know if there's a fix for this pretensioner problem, or does it mean I need a new one?
As for the windows, I'm going to tear into that in the next few weeks. I'll hope lube does the trick. Thanks for the tips.
By the way, I also have a clutch question but I'll post that on one of the repair forums.

The pretensioners I've seen are just spring mechanisms to roll up the excess belt length...might have a collection of fuzz...or need cleaning and oiling? Might need to remove some plastic to get to them?SilverTTSR544 wrote: Anybody know if there's a fix for this pretensioner problem, or does it mean I need a new one?
I've never actually fixed one...I just make sure I keep them out of the door. Main thing is to make sure they are snug when in use...have heard of people being in accidents with a loose selt belt...hurt a lot....
Give a boy a gun-give a biatch a cell phone-and pretty soon you almost got yourself a police state.
