Vent between tank and canister plugged

Post by marlinh »

Hi, just a question for anyone out there who has had the vent line corrode in front of the fuel tank. It is causing fuel to leak out of the filler cap after the car sits in the sun. Blowing back to the tank from the canister purge, it is completely blocked. I understand that loop in the system is required (for expansion, I believe) but my question is could that line be replaced with rubber fuel hose of sufficient length to replace the rotten part. It looks like an easier repair than trying to bend a replacement steel line. Has anyone had any experience with this? Thanks.

Not 100% sure but I can't see why rubber fuel hose wouldn't work. It is only a vent to so no pressure or suction anyways. The psi in this fuel system is very low and the chances of a rubber fuel hose sucking closed on this system is slim.

I think you would be just fine. There a few threads on fuel tank hose leaks and repair, check them out and see what other members have done.

That would be an acceptable repair, the whole line from the canister to the tank is not all metal anyway, it has some rubber flex hoses from the metal coming out of the tank to the metal line connected to the underside of the car. I do not think there would be a repair of the metal line without replacing the hole fuel pick-up and tank cover since there are all integral to the lines as I recall. The whole assembly has to be replaced, or as you figured, cutting it off and just clamping on a length of fuel line.

Check out this thread, diregard the fuel pump issue but maybe you need to clean out you carbon canister. This Terc had a similar issue while sitting in the sun.

I don't think the carbon canister is plugged. When I pulled the hose off at the canister, that comes from the tank there was no fuel smell at all. Trying to blow back through the hose was fruitless. Someone had replaced the tank and sending unit before my friend got this car. It had a history of puking gas out of the filler tank, so much so that the stains on the paint are obvious. I think the mechanic who did that repair obviously didn't fix the original problem. There won't be a problem hooking another rubber hose to the pipe coming from the tank since that is new. I was just wondering if introducing a long length of rubber hose would have any detrimental effect.

Should be all good. Canister is easy to check though. Look in the FSM and see what you think. What could it hurt to make sure the whole system is top notch? A little time for reassurance and you learn something too.

the canisters can be backed up, as Turtcel notes, there is an easy test for the sytem in the FSM. The plugged canister can also be removed and soaked in soapy water, flushed and reused often. A bad filler cap can also cause it to puke fuel out the cap. The whole system has to operate properly or it will puke fuel at one end or the other. It is a fairly simple system and easy to test.

Many Tercs have stains down the body under the filler flap. I always presumed it was a combination of careless pumpers and mid-'80s Toy paint. Goldie had some pretty bad stains, but most have disappeared with claybarring.

The people who sold this vehicle said it had a problem with puking fuel. They didn't hold that back. It just obviously didn't get fixed from the repairs they paid for. I don't think the tank had any other leaks.
