How many miles do you average per tank?

Post by danieldialtone »

I fill mine up when it gets to about 1/4 and that's usually about 210 or so. Just curious the maximum amount of miles you would get out of one whole tank

It really depends on your MPG, I can usually get around 275 miles when the light comes on at ~32 mpg. Technically the tank is 11 gallons, but I've only managed to pull 10 out of it before it starts to sputter a bit on cornering.

The tank actually holds a tad over 13 gallons, regardless of body style or drivetrain.

most of the Tercel Wagons that i have had run out of gas at the 12 gallon point
i think there may be more gas left in the tank but for some reason it cannot suck it out
i say that because my daily driver has taken as much as 12.6 gallons
i have not ran out of gas yet in that car so i do not know how far it will go
last summer i once hit 400 miles before filling it up
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

Similar to xirdneh, the best mileage per tank I ever got with my then-new '83 (with the 'highway' gearing) was almost 450.
Mind, this was involuntary running on fumes in a desolate stretch of just-opened I-64 in Kentucky.
Regardless of MPG, I never trust running more than 300+/- miles per tank nowadays - who knows what kind of crud lurks at the bottom of the tank?

I've been getting around 280 miles every time I fill up with just over 10 gallons. Yeah I could probably stretch the tank further, but I haven't had the guts to see just how far I can go after the gas light comes on steady until it runs out. With my Toy Truck I can usually get a day or two worth of driving, but with my T4 I just don't know...

I get about 280 miles in city, and about 315 mixed hwy per tank, but 11 gal fill up. I have gone as far as 340 miles on one tank of pure hwy. I think the 13 gal cap is a lie, there is not way to get that much in it. Might be the total tank capacity, but if the pick-up tube can not reach it, that extra gallon is useless. I have two corolla tanks in my garage that are also supposed to be about 13 gal, but darn if they look a bit larger than the Tercel tank when side by side. so, it is anyone's guess why Toyota claims it has a 13.2 gal tank, you will never get that much in it.

Weird, I'll have to look again but I thought the manual said the Tercel has an 11 gallon tank...

If memory serves I read somewhere it's a 13.2 gallon tank. But like you I can't ever get to that last gallon, and I've run out in my T4 about a half dozen times (most recently 3 days ago). I've never gotten more than 320 miles from the ~12 gallons I can access. I don't think there has ever been a car that allows you to completely drain the tank.

Whenever I buy a car one of the first things I do is run 'er out of gas (with a full gas can in the trunk of course). This way I know what the gauge reads at empty, how the car acts when running out, and how much fuel I can't access.
It's a scientific fact that in a twin engine aircraft, when one engine fails there is always enough power in the remaining engine to make it all the way to the crash site.

I have never figured out how many miles I can get once the light comes on but I do remember one time the light came on and I was at around 290 or 300 miles and that was driving mixed highway and in town while babying the gas pedal. Now on the other hand, running 75+ MPH over mountain passes in Montana eats it up real quick and driving like that usually gets me 250 miles before the light comes on. On I-81 south going from PA to TN I was filling at 250 and that was sitting somewhere in the neighborhood of 1/8 of a tank (+ or - depending on how I was driving).

I just filled up my tank this morning with 91 octane non-ethanol (all I run when I can). I had a bad clutch and a leaking intake gasket that was causing runnability issues on my last tank with same fuel and I just got 27 mpg...all in town driving and the car never really has the chance to warm up.

That seems pretty good to me for the circumstances.

Now my clutch is brand new and I have fixed the intake leak. The car runs super smooth now with no issues. I will recalculate my fuel mileage again and report back. I am hoping to sqeeze another mpg out of the car now.

I am also interested to check my highway mpg's but here in Idaho the speed limit is 75mph and these cars aren't geared for that so I am questionable about how good it will be at those speeds.

At 65 I get 30 mpg, at 70 that drops to 27.. If I cruise 75 it drops to about 25 mpg.

Most of Oregon's speed limits are 55 mph on state highways and only 65 mph on their inrterstates, maybe we should move there to consrve gas....HAHAHA.
