Decided to build a new rear bumper.

Post by Tercel__jon »

Took the wagon out for some fun a few weekends ago.

Ive decided that I want better approach and departure angles. I dont have the materials I would need to build a proper front bumper so I started on the back first. That, and Im waiting to see if my friends actually pitch in and help buy me a winch for my birthday.

Image

I pulled the bumper cover itself off first. Ignore the skeleton, A friend of mine hung him there for halloween when she decorated my car.

I really wanted a swing out tire carrier, but the stock bumper wasnt strong enough. So, tube bumper it is.

Image

The pivot is the hub from a lawnmower rim and the axle. Here it is welded to the pipe.

Image

Heres the completed swing out T. I still want to add some angle Iron for some bracing.

And here it is with a tire on it.

I just kinda hung a pipe wrench on there and tossed the tire onto the wrench to give me some motivation. Im debating about cutting the hub off my other axle and using it to mount the tire, or using some flat bar that I have.

Heres a shot of it open. It looks like its bending, but its really not.

Thanks. The pipe wrench was just there to give the wheel something to hang on to so I could see if anything was bending. I have some pipe on there now, just got done making the holes in the plate for the studs. Should have it all welded up by this evening. Pictures later tonight.

Well...here it is. Need to add a few braces and paint it. I went with the steel plate, weighs alot less than a hub. Ill grab some paint tomorrow while Im in town.

You can get some removable caps for the ends and have a secret storage compartment inside the bumper tube.

That's awesome! I was going to make something very similar for mine, with the tire angled to go with the hatch. Weld on some hi-lift mounts and a gas can carrier and go on an expedition!

Exactly the idea I was going for. That and getting a much better departure angle. Front bumper is next...but it will be a while. Need to gather stronger materials since it will be used to push small trees and cars/trucks out of ditches in the winter.
