Hi from Melbourne Australia

I'd first like to say thanks to all that have helped me in the past on this forum.

Due to the strength of it..I've bought a new (to me) Terc!

it's an '84 SR5 with A/C, Sump Guard, 12 stacker CD player and the clencher to the sale 'the power sunroof'.

Love to post some shots (don't know how.. shall I send jpegs to IcE?)

Anyways, my '83 SR5 (300,000kms) (is still a great drive it's only downfull is it's rusty roof!!! no rust anywhere else! unlike you salted road driving northerners)

It’ss having it's good parts donated and placed in my new low millage (well 175,000kms/ 100,000miles!) 84 SR5 that’s pretty mint. Unfortunately I can’t keep both as I live in the CBD.

I'm putting the nearly new Brake Master Cylinder, the SR5 Alloys and a few little trinklets from the '83.

But my main Question is

The Donor '83 Terc has a recently reconditioned Carb with a new Carb Kit (which by the way fixed 90% of it's engine problems) will this fit on the '84.. both having stock 3A engines? The ’84 seems to have a bit more emissions gear.

My mechanic is going to do this for Beer! but I don't want to abuse the favour. How long should it take him to swap them over? and will he need to adjust both Carbs again? or is it a cut and paste job (if you know what I mean)?

thanks in Advance

Matt

It should take a few hours to do a good job of it. This includes cleaning the gasket surfaces and making sure the vacuum lines go to the right places and are in good shape. The carb is the same.

If you're getting rid of one car, would you like to sell me some parts from it, or are you planning to keep the parts for spares? I need front corner lights.

It's relatively cut and paste in terms of tuning. The only problem might be the extra emissions stuff. Just take a look at the vacuum diagrams under the hood and see what pieces are different. It shouldn't be much, if any. Most likely, the carbs will be identical with the only extra emissions stuff being located externally which can be easily routed to the new carb. Like 3A said, it should take a couple of hours to disconnect and reconnect the new carb. It shouldn't need any tuning changes if it ran fine before.

Swapping the carbs is pretty easy. As said above, cleaning gaskets etc takes the majority of the time. The differences between the carbs should be minimal if none. There is a tag on Toyota carbs that identifies what revision it is. Just compare the tags on the two carbs. If the tags say the same number, then they will be 100% interchangeable. If the #s are different, then a couple vacuum hoses might be different. I'm sure it won't be a big deal.

Thanks guys, It's all with the Mechanic today I've given him the advice. Think I might give him 2 slabs of beer for his work!

I just installed a Holley rebuilt for an 82 on my 86. The biggest difference was the bracket for the return spring. I did have to reroute a couple of vacuum connections, and plug a couple more, but I've found the 5mpg that's been missing for the last year, and the car idles properly for the first time since I've owned it.
