There's no way this car will yield 40 mpg at normal hwy speeds. You can achieve that if you drive it with a very light foot under 50 mph.

Were it closer, that would really be tempting - but not for $4K for a 2WD with an AT, even though with "ice cold AC."

P.S. On any used car - is AC anything ever than "ice cold?"

The automatic is very smooth, but very boring and you wish you had the two other gears. C'mon ARCHINSTL, don't you want a companion for Goldie?

I thought so too , Once to took my mom ( 90 year of age ) out for a long drive , She kept saying " slow down , you're going too fast " so I told her I am with a speed limit , so I drove between 50-55 mph( 80-90 kph) for over 300 km . then drive fast after ward till low of gas , I was getting over 35 MPG .I was surprise .

I also achieved about that same mileage when I drove 55 mph on a 100 mile stretch of the highway, so it's definitely possible, but at speeds higher than 60, your fuel economy suffers noticeably with the automatic.
