1985 4WD Butterscotch $5500?

Post by EliRush »

You can buy two, three, or even four decent Tercs, or one...

And, I just watched the commercials that that very car was supposedly featured in...does anyone wanna see if it has water damage from the second one? :P

I wonder if the seller is the purchaser who posted here earlier this year?

Did he ever get that diff from Petros? Kinda a low-ball offer, I thought...
More on it from a number of members, with tercel4wdrules having actually inspected it at one time:

Sounds pretty messed up for 5k. Even if the 4WD is repaired, what about the rust?

I spent $600 on my Terc, and another $400 on maintenance stuff...I would rather have mine.

I sent him a querying email about the rear diff.
He sent the below-pasted message - vey polite, I must say.
He also sent 44 (!) photos! I will try to load them later on, but it's a lengthy process.
I didn't ask him if he was the one who "joined" this April and made a few posts in one of the above links - figgered it best to act clueless to get more info.

Yes sir, Thomas, I did. I have all receipts to show for the mechanical work, too.
I bought a carfax report before I actually purchased the vehicle to know its history, so here's the scoop:
Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois for the first 40,000 or so miles. The first Chicago owners apparently didn't maintain the transmission somehow (I believe the Jiffy Lube that serviced the car gave it the wrong oil and it screwed up the trans-axle or something). And so, after installing a new trans-axle, they failed to match up the rear differential and instead put in a different gear ratio. Because of the mismatched rear differential, the 4WD was out of commission the rest of its life.

It then had a short stint in Arizona or New Mexico (can't remember) for several thousand miles.
The rest of its life was in Los Angeles (where the filming for the commercials was done) until about 66,000, when I picked it up.
In my ownership, I had all major mechanical work done including installing the correct final drive ratio, so now the 4WD is operational.

Now, I can't and won't lie, in the pictures you'll see rust on the bottom (obviously typical of a Chicago car); however, none of it's major nor does it affect any functionalities. I was considering sand blasting it, but since I'm opting to sell, I didn't want to spend the extra money.
I can't send all the pictures in one-go, so you'll get 4 e-mails including this one full of them.
If you have any other questions please let me know.
Thanks!

Dairy Queen Machine owner here, and yes I am the same person who joined in April; the same person who enthusiastically raved about how excited I was about getting the car (No need to try to squeeze it out of me by acting clueless, just ask me anything and I'll answer to the best of my knowledge.)

First off I'd like to say I know my asking price is much...obviously. But I bought it for $4k flat, and invested over $2k. I'm a college student who's just trying to get back most of the money I've spent. I wish I could let her go for much cheaper, but somewhere along the line I know someone as crazy as me will buy it. I'll make sure it'll go to good hands.

If you have any questions, please let me know. Thanks.

What a beauty! Frankly I don't think $5500 is astronomical given the condition. Remember that one T4WD with similar mileage that was for sale on eBay in N. Carolina that sold for $10k??
