Hi, picked myself up a Navy Blue '86 Tercel 4wd a couple weeks ago. Really excited to have come across this board! Overall the car does a great job getting from point A to point B, but does seem to have some character(issues), mostly related to the carb and vacuum leaks. A friend helped me reset the timing, as well as disable the vacuum advancer, as it no longer worked and was a major vacuum leak, and it runs significantly better. Anywho, i'm not super savvy when it comes to cars, but i think this will be a good car to learn a thing or two with, so you guys will surely be seeing a lot of questions from me!
Cheers!

welcome, teague. sounds like you already have a good idea about vac leaks so may have already read the FAQ. here's the link to it, in case you haven't. it talks about vac leaks and other problems common to tercs.

i found a big difference in having a working vac advance unit so i would replace it. they can be bought new and are easily removed from the distributor. just make sure that you reconnect the vac lines correctly, as the different ports supply different amounts of advance.

Welcome to the Club - LOTS of friendly and helpful peeps here!
I got a new one from a Toy dealer back in '06 or so...not cheap. If you go that route, definitely try Butler Toy in Indy, Conicelli Toy in PA, or Village Toy in FL; they definitrly have the best prices of dealers.
Advance and Autozone, et al, have them for $80 +/-.
