Not unusual at all to misdiagnose the problem and replace perfectly good parts, and not fix the problem. Of course it sometimes occurs that more than one thing is wrong and needs fixing, fix the first problem, and the second one is easier to find. Mechanics get blamed for that too, even though it was not his fault (except for not doing a more thorough diagnosis). But that is why I have always stressed to all the newbies, diagnosis the problem first, than fix it.
I completely understand about mechanics getting blamed for not-yet-diagnosed problems that arise.

I am a certified Dell tech, did house and business calls got blamed for years of end user neglect. Finally quit--I couldn't take getting yelled at any longer--prior to computer repair I worked telephone support for the Internet and desktop support for ten years.

Ultimately he did the work I asked .. only the Gods know for sure if anyone is at fault.

I'll explain all of this when I see you or off list. I don't want to rant more than I have, I kinda forgot myself.
