Charity Rally Tercel across the outback

Post by Mattel »

It's a rally, but what is different about this one is that we take shitty cars and see if we can drive them across Australia. During this time we will truly experience the Australian outback and raise money for Cancer Council.

Apparantly they had to buy a car for under $1,000 and drive from Melbourne to Cannes - some guys took a Tercel to the challenge.

Some good photos on the facebook page

great idea for a "everyman's" race. I love it! but are you implying the Tercel4wd is a shitty car?

Great pictures.

Either that area has very iron rich dust or the car blew a hose and shot out some very rusty water.

Petros- don't take offence. I sometimes refer to mine as the best shitbox ever! That phrase was coined back in the 80's...

What's that extra vac hose on the valve cover?

I also want a blue tarp bra/cold front!

Looks like there's tits on that pig too. Next stop burning man?

I think it's not the model of the car more like the condition of the car. Great to see some photos of 4 alfa romeos including a rare 33 4wd sportswagon make the journey and a couple of tiny Nissan Micras that were turbocharged.

That looks like sand all over the engine bay, if you watch the videos and look at the other photos you see the guys from the Tercel changing over the air cleaner.

Love to do one of these sometime. But I don't finish uni for two more years!

Greetings Mr Fish,

I admire your work! no, I haven't done the rally I just copied the first paragraph off your the rally website. Did you know that Tercels completed the Paris-Dakar in 1983 and 84.. so you have desert racing pedigree! I'd love to go on one sometime. Looks great fun. Did you make it OK in the end? what happens to the car on the other end of the trip? cheers! and well done

Mate i bought the car back, had some major rust issues but i got it fixed, car made it only blew a crank seal on the second day so a quick fix, found the seal in broken hill, the car the next day flat towed a commador 350kms the next day!! what a little legend

He is going again in the rally, first car that will have done it twice, it is from Alidade to perth via Uluru, we will be taking 3 tercels this year, 84,85,86! two are perfect and i think we need to do a valve adjustment in one it has a bit of a miss, and replace the cluth and fronth left spring! apart from that its perfect

lots of kms on our tasty fish has 425,000, the turtle has 576kms and marti well she is just run in at 360,000kms

I so much want to come down under to run that rally. You blokes get all the cheap thrills.

I wish there was something similar in the states, we could make a run from Alaska to mexico, or even to Panama! From snow and ice to blazing desert, Arctic circle to equator, what a run in a beater!

Pete, that sounds like a lot of fun, would love to be part of that convoy sometime but I gotta finish my uni first. You will get heaps of good advice on this site but it sounds like you are doing pretty good without us. Have you tried to replace the gearbox oil? that's always made a big difference to me. where are you based? There is a guy near the snow line in Vicco that is selling two Tercels for $1200 on gumtree that look really good if you need a couple more!
