Just wondering if you guys had any problems with the rear diff.?

Mine has 384 000 km on it, and starts to be noisy, especially at 100 km/h and more. I did change the oil in it recently, and found metal parts in the old oil.. sounds bad....

Did you ever change the rear diff. on yours? Is it a big job since I have a spare diff to exchange..?

Thanks!

It's not that big of a job, assuming you're swapping the whole 3rd member, maybe 1-2 hrs depending on how fast you work. Drain the oil, then remove the rear brake drums, and pop out the rear axles. Unhook the drive line, undo all the bolts holding it on, put the new one in, and installation is reverse of removal. I'd would look at the rear axles and make sure the splines are in good shape too. I had two different gears in mine and it bound up the rear diff, no obvious damage but it would stick in one spot.

If you just had a few bits of metal on the magnet...maybe it's OK...might check the pinion nut...they can loosen and cause a whine. You just torque it to specs...but never over and use some threadlock on it. If it's loose...might be a good time to replace the seal too.
