Absolutely! I go no further than "Corolla all trac" in my search, so this never would have come on my radar; a great reminder for all of you to check your local listings to confirm what I don't find!

That is the main problem with these cars is that they have so many different names as opposed to the Tercel 4wd which was pretty well the same all over the world (except japan)

I just do searches for Tercel and look at all listings that have the correct years. A few times I found 4wd fixers really cheap because they did not even list it was a 4wd wagon in the ad. Sometimes they will list in the ad it is 4wd, but not in the listing headline. Sometimes the people that own these things do not ever realize the 4wd feature is the most important element to get it sold. I was the only one that inquired, so I bought it cheap.

I would do the same thing if you are looking for all-trac, look at all adds with corolla wagons for the correct years.

That is my modus operandi for local searches, but if I tried that on my international hunt, I would never get through it

thought i just posted this a few minutes ago but can't find it so................what is the difference between awd and 4x4 on this particular car? who puts it into 4x4? me, just like on our tercels or does this vehicle determine when its time to be 4x4?
What do you think this would be like as a highway runner? Honestly I won't drive my Tercel the 350 miles to Whitehorse because of the road noise I arrive exhausted. Opinions anyone?

i bought an automatic all-trac and it was in excellent shape but the auto made it feel like i was driving my grandma's car so i sold it to a friend. i can't find the emails but he was getting around 30 mpg mixed driving. i really like all-tracs and will buy a manual when i find a good cheap one, just to try it out.

if you google this, you will find a bunch of different answers. my understanding is that there are two big differences.

1) AWD is on all the time while 4x4 is 2WD normally and 4WD on demand.
2) AWD has a center differential which allows it to drive on pavement without front vs rear tire binding issues which 4x4s experience in the same situations.

there are newer AWD systems that are 'intelligent' and can sense when to do all kinds of fancy tricks but i personally think it's all garbage. i prefer to drive my vehicle rather than have a computer decide what to do. less crap to break, too.

i can go look at this all-trac the next time i'm in vic, if you like.

The dealer (seller) states that there is a button on the dash that activates the 4x4. No cruise control on this model. Despite the excellent condition/one owner this is a significant price tag in my opinion. KBB indicates that same year without 4x4 in excellent condition is valued at less than $3000.00

i'm not sure about the manuals but the automatic had a button on the dash and it locked the center diff. i believe the manuals have something similar but i know for certain that their 4WD is always engaged and cannot be turned off.

the price is super steep. i have seen them fetch close to that around here but i agree it's far too high. $3000 would be a good price IMO.

My 5spd manual has the center diff lock button on the dash (they moved it post '92 to near the steering wheel to allow for duel DIN stereos) just ahead of the gearshift that does exactly that. Normally all wheels are driven. But if one wheel loses grip in sand or whatever then you press the magic button for extra grip but not for pavement. Modern systems don't have this level of control but probably stop newbies stuffing up the trans. I feel that 1st gear on these cars is really low to make up for the fact that it doesn't have the crawler gear of the Tercel.

The NVH levels on these are really low compared to the Tercel so you can actually talk to someone and listen to music on which is nice on the freeways we have here.

Also - this one doesn't have all-trac on the rear window but Corolla 4wd - just like the australian ones. Price is probably justified if it's really good condition
