when I put the car up on jackstands and let it idle in first both front drive axles were moving side to side. all i can figure is that the carrier for the front gear set is damaged some how. I'm going to dive into it tomorrow with the help of my friend who is a bit of a transmission nerd. we went to college together and took the transmission classes together, so I'm willing to undertake large jobs with his help. Hes coming over tomorrow, so thats when the fun starts. lol

Think the tooth fairy will come?

we decided not to change the pinion, but instead the whole front diff unit. that saved us alot of work. there was so rust in the carrier of the new/salvaged unit, so we took the carrier out and moved the ring gear to the old carrier and swapped it over. so it ended up being the bearings, races, carrier from the old unit, and the new unit gave us the body, pinion and ring gear. sorry no pics of us setting up the diff.

At this point we decided to open the rest of the transmission and inspect everything.

We didn't end up taking the shafts apart because all the syncros checked out. so we put it back together. we decided to bolt the bell housing to the table. this worked pertty well!

pretty much. time to get the car cleaned up and ready for the overhauled engin and trans. I've been lazy with my yard work and other chores, so I'm thinking a week or 2 and I'll have the trans and engine back in the car. then I'll just have to figure out how to make it all work :D

Went to the dealer today and got the bushings for the shifter... the ones in the trans were not that bad, but what heck I'm here might as well change them.

Like a lot of us, as we age it is not uncommon to loose a few teeth. Take care of that seinor citizen Tercel4wd and it will be resurrected to serve you for a long time.
