Re: Taking the plung, Weber Carb
cheapest way is US Post office, ground freight. It will take up to 10 days, but will only cost about $10 to ship I would guess.
Why did you not just buy the regrind cam, and than once it arrives you swap it out and ship your old one back for the refund? you did not need to buy a used cam to do that. $30 seems a bit high for a wrecking yard cam shaft.

Re: Taking the plung, Weber Carb
The junk yards around here have gotten to be a rip off. a few years ago it was awesome because there are so many yards in the Sacramento area... but with the economy taking a turn and the price of everything at the yard being fixed to the cost of scrap there are no good deals left. I got the second cam because I wanted to keep the old one. I know its gonna end up being useless in the end, but until I see the car run with the new cam I wanted to keep the old one around.
I wish I would have called Delta Cams before going and getting the core at the wrecking yard... but its been storming around here and Saturday it was clear and I had nothing better to do so off to the yard I went. As my sister would say, "If money was meant to be held onto it would have come with handles." You live you learn.

Re: Taking the plung, Weber Carb
I think I figured out why my old carb has always been a little off. After getting the intake manifold sandlasted, look what i found!

sent a new manifold to my dad. hope to get it back soon.

Re: Taking the plung, Weber Carb
There is a steel bracket under the intake/exhaust manifold assembly that bolts to the side of the block with a 12mm bolt. IT is easy to forget, and sometimes a PIA when pulling the head or manifold because it is not obvious when working from the top.
I have seen many Tercels with the mount bolt missing from this bracket and always wondered if it was really necessary to have it. I guess it is, this is exactly the kind of failure I would expect to see if the support bracket was not bolted to the side of the block. Many cars with aluminum intake manifolds, both carb and EFI, have a support bracket like this, I guess they are important to have in place.
So when you get a replacement manifold you should make sure the steel support bracket is bolted to the side of the block.

Re: Taking the plung, Weber Carb
almost done!

only a few more questions... How should I set up the vacuum lines for the distributer? do I just hook up the advance side o the pod on the dist to the vacuum port on the carb? what about the retard port(s)?

Re: Taking the plung, Weber Carb
that looks AWESOME, seriously. but what's with the dizzy? is that some sort of aftermarket thing or just something you put in place for the pic?
with a weber, most only have four vac hoses: the PCV to intake manifold, the crankcase breather to the bottom of the weber air filter housing, the vacuum advance canister port closest to the dizzy hooked up to manifold vacuum (one of the ports that screws into the intake manifold just in front of the carb), and the vac advance can port furthest from the dizzy hooked up to a port on the passenger side of the carb, clearly marked in this diagram.

if your charcoal canister works or you are able to purge or replace it, i would try hooking it up to the port marked 'vapor vent to canister.' most just leave the canister in place but plugged or pull it out and let the metal line from the gas tank vent to the atmosphere but i want to hook mine back up once i refurbish a few charcoal canisters. the placement of this port on the weber is quite different from the stock tercel carb (it's located low down, near the base of the stock carb) so i'm not sure about this one but it can't hurt to try.
EDIT--i should mention that since you have to delete the phenolic spacer to get enough clearance to close the hood, you have to be creative about routing the PCV hose to the intake manifold. splatterdog modified the EGR port to receive the PCV hose, that works well and is pretty easy to do. do a search for it and you'll find pics.

Re: Taking the plung, Weber Carb
That's a 1A dizzy from an earlier Tercel if I'm not mistaken. It has the same bore as a 3A dizzy but the vac can is on the other side and it needs an external coil. I got a rebuilt one a few months back but haven't installed 'er yet. SirNik do let us know how you wire it. Cool idea on the white block paint action, makes it easy to find leaks. The whole motor looks great.
It's a scientific fact that in a twin engine aircraft, when one engine fails there is always enough power in the remaining engine to make it all the way to the crash site.

Re: Taking the plung, Weber Carb
Right now it's dark but tomorrow I'll try to think about taking some pics of my vac set-up! I've kept the EGR and retard advance! Just route the vac lines as they should and put a line splitter to the vac line of the carb and plug everything else not being used! I even kept the tercel UFO!
Dont let your eyes to fool you!!!

Re: Taking the plung, Weber Carb
Thanks for the complements on the paint job. some of my friends think i'm crazy for paining it white, but I have a rule, if you're going to paint the engine paint it a light color so you can see the oil leaks. with my car being blue and white I thought blue and white for the engine would look good. I took the valve cover off and took it to my sister. shes going to do some custom calligraphy on it. I have no idea how its gonna look when done, but I told her I want it to say "The little engine that could"

Re: Taking the plung, Weber Carb
spare parts. I'm hoping that in that line of transmissions there is at least enough parts to make one really nice transmission.
My tercel is the 4th, and last, my family has owned over the years, my dad and myself are both guilty of scavenging parts... so when preping to rebuild the transmission I grabbed all the related parts I could.
When I was a kid we had a transmission go out in the first tercel, and my dad ordered a new transmission from the wrecker, but it was for a later tercel with the diffrent gear ratio. so he ordered one from a wrecker direct from Japan, yet another gear ratio. after that he decided not to buy a 3rd transmission but to rebild one out of 3. he called it "frankentrans" That transmission was the "crispest" transmission in any of our cars. of course when my dad decided to sell one of the tercels back when i was in highschool, that was the car that got sold. so I'm left with the half of a transmission from his build, the trans out of my car from high school, a transmission I was given but was told was dead, and the one out of my car in the drive way.
This weekend I build "frankentrans 2.0"
