Hi,
I replaced the thermostat recently, but neglected to orient the pressure relief valve on the rim of the thermostat
with a mark on the thermostat housing. My Chilton's book says to do this, but the Toyota Service Manual says nothing.
I oriented it the way the old one was: horizontal, facing forward.
Does anyone know how much the orientation matters?
I'm concerned because it's running slightly hotter now, and has had vapor lock in the summer a few times.
Thanks,
Steve

Re: Orientation of thermostat?
don't know if it matters, but i always orient the bleed hole vertically, ie the highest point on the t-stat. hope this helps.
if it aint there, there's a good chance it won't break!

The AutoZone site mentions installing with the hole vertical.

Have you ever perused the AZ Terc site's guide? It is more than just a supplement to the FSM - it has photos.

Re: Orientation of thermostat?
Tom: Wow, that AZ site looks like a great resource! I'll be exploring it some more.
Thanks to both of you for responding. I studied the pictures in the AZ link and convinced myself that my old thermostat's orientation was in fact vertical as desired, and that's the way I put the new one in.
Cheers,
Steve

Re: Orientation of thermostat?
The AZ site is, in many ways, better than the FSM - but really, both are needed.
The AZ site has mucho info on every system of our cars - explore it with joy. I also signed in as owning an '85 Corolla RWD, as there is some overlap in info and pix.
I've always wondered why it has so much on a car that can't possibly have that many adherents nowadays - I even sent it an email a few years ago thanking it for the info and keeping it online - and also telling it of our Club.
You must have had good luck with your Tercs - I noticed you joined in early 2005 and rarely post.

Re: Orientation of thermostat?
is the pressure relief valve the little rivet that rattles around in the ring of the t-stat?

Re: Orientation of thermostat?
that is not a pressure relief valve at all, it is just an air bleed to prevent trapped air when you fill it. Some call it a rattle valve, not sure why it is necessary to have a loose rivet, some brands just have a small hole.
The radiator cap is the pressure relief valve.

Re: Orientation of thermostat?
sorry, wrong terminology. air bleed is what i meant. time to pull it apart and pay attention to that thing this time.
