7af swap possibility... w/ my carbs
I found a 7afe w/110k on it the other day that may be really cheap and may go for the swap. As I have posted before I am running 80psi on a couple of cylinders and need to get moving in that direction.
I have done a 5afc swap before.
Anything you guys can think of that would be different from this other than the need for an external fuel pump?
Last time I dropped the engine cradle made a manifold and pounded the snot out of my firewall.
I am thinking this plus a fuel pump and swapping my carbs over would get me on the road again.
Would I lose power over the efi w/ the 32mms? Obviously tuning is key but what is likely?

Re: 7af swap possibility... w/ my carbs
no thoughts on this guys?
Any ideas on mileage change?
I am guessing it would be better.

Re: 7af swap possibility... w/ my carbs
That is a very high torque engine (long stroke crank) and should be well suited to off road driving, it is a great engine. But the engine is taller than the 4afe, so I do not know what kind of problems you might find. It also has a two part oil pan that many be a problem to get it to fit. And you will need a custom exhaust header, and either go distributorless or also "pound the snot" out of your firewall. (I did not know there would be much snot to pound out of that particular part of the car....)
IT would be an interesting experiment, I would suspect the fuel econmy to be similar or even slightly better. this is a larger engine so running it at part throttle is not going to be its best efficiency than being closer to full throttle.
As a temp fix to your 3a you might throw a can of "Restore" into the oil, works wonders as an interim fix.

Re: 7af swap possibility... w/ my carbs
Anyone interested in my 3a manifold for the 32mm's if I do the swap? Maybe $200. I see Mikunis on Craigslist all the time for 50-60 bucks and I can help you get the right jets for it. About the same cost as a weber and in my opinion better.
Where do I find RESTORE?
Oil pan is different? Hmm on the 5afc I swaped the terc pan and oil pickop. Would this not be an option?
If the block is taller than a 4a I would need to drop the cradle by 3 inches or so.

Re: 7af swap possibility... w/ my carbs
Any automotive store should carry! Often called no smoke/no leak! I use Bardhal no smoke+no leak! Dunno seems to help my bad high revving habit! No saving although the price of that stuff is pretty much what my engine would burn in oil, almost the same price as a set of valve seal too!it's for sure it's quicker to poor the bottle! How does the mikuni's works on the 3A? Planning on using them on my 4AG!
And for the 7afe Qs, it's just not a engine on my list of engine I've worked on! So I got few knowledge about it, I know that some guys does some 7age by swappin heads of 4age by that's it! Try some 4ag forums some do there!
For the use of your mikuni's it will work as for performance dunno! With the right jetting most likely it will but won't be as accurate as the EFI! You'll get one setting of your choice everytime you'd fiddle with them! Meaning economy, all out or a mix of both! If a daily driver I would jet them in a mix of both with a tad more on the all out side! Don't ask me any jet numbers Dunno, not for that engine anyway do some research, I'm sure some guys out there have 7AG or 7AF!

Re: 7af swap possibility... w/ my carbs
You will have to inspect the oil pan arrangement yourself of the 7afe, difficult to explain and you may have to take it all apart to see if the 3a Tercel pan will work on the 7afe engine. It appears since there is more stroke in the crank they had to make the pan deeper, it is a two piece oil pan, part cast aluminum, part stamped steel. but not sure why, that is a guess on my part.
Restore you can buy in Autozone and I have seen in Walmart auto dept. It NOT the same as Bardhal (thick oil with zinc), not even close. It is a lightweight bluish oil with fine soft metal particles in suspension (you have to shake the can good before you pour it into the engine). I have tried many brands and Restore is the only one that really impressed me. Took a rescue Tercel that would foul plugs so bad I had to swap them out every 300 miles (a long slow drive home from Texas), burned about a quart of oil every 600 miles too. One can of Restore in El Paso, and I drove it 4,000 miles home without changing the plugs (in-fact they still look great) and did not use a single quart of oil.

Ok I think I know the stuff you talking about! Not sure if it was called Restore but the can was pink I believe, had to shake it too now that you mentioned, had a ticking valve on my truck(ran lead) cause of the poor fuel quality! Solved the ticking and switched to 94 octane fuel minimum, ticking didn't came back yet and its been a year plus!!

It comes in silver metal can with a pull-tab type top. There is nothing like it.

Re: 7af swap possibility... w/ my carbs
Not a fan of the 7A-FE. I had one in my Geo Prism. It was a great beater engine, but always leaked oil. They have a pretty compounded oil pan that will not clear the T4WD engine crossmemember and are at least 6" taller block wise.
Check out the MR2OC as there are a number of threads about the engine.

the 5afc pan didn't clear either but I just swapped the 3a pan over. Hope this is a possibility. not worried about height and the current motor leaks but I understand the point there. I will make sure to put some good gaskets in there. I will also have to check the pan to make sure the larger crank doesn't interfere. I am also thinking to run the factory clutch and lightened fly.

Re: 7af swap possibility... w/ my carbs
I am fairly certain the 7afe flywheel uses the same six bolt pattern as the 3ac, so the Tercel flywheel should bolt right onto the back of the crank of 7afe engine. You need the flywheel to fit into the Tercel bell housing, the 7afe flywheel might be different enough where it will not fit. So you may have an easy swap with the flywheel.

Re: 7af swap possibility... w/ my carbs
7A-FE is 8 bolt, just like the 4A-GE.
And I tried to seal up the pan multiple times on my Preo Gism. Even after paying Toyota to fix it, it still leaked. Only a little but it always leaked between the sub pan. Also most 7A-FEs in the junkyards seem to suffer the same problem.

Re: 7af swap possibility... w/ my carbs
well if it is an 8 bolt I am not sure I want in on that...
but all the places I am searching say all of the 4,5,7afe's have 6 bolts
hmmm
Synth are you 100% on the 8 bolt 7afe

Re: 7af swap possibility... w/ my carbs
Worst case if a 8 bolt like the 4age maybe the 4age flywheel with the 3a starter ring gear pressed on like Larry did would work! Simple mod!
(Edit) You may encounter a snag, had nothing to do so did a bit of research! The 7afe flywheel is 6 bolt pattern (read somewhere it's at 74mm and the tercel 54mm don't take my word for it tho but other site claim 3a,4af,5af,7af and 20/22R use the same bolt pattern, however the early 4age flywheel is 200mm wide and later at 212mm and 4agze 228mm! Don't remember the tercel one but smaller a little! The 7afe use 212mm flywheel, this is where I see the snag, to fit in the T4WD trans you'll need the 200mm 4age flywheel with the 3a starter gear pressed on for a 4age swap but the 212mm I doubt it would fit in or maybe I'll have to check again as Larry got 20v4age not sure on the flywheel is using! But if 212mm don't fit, you may gonna have to temper with a flywheel quite a bit! I'll get back on you on this!
(Another Edit). SNAGGED, Just what I thought he did use a 200mm flywheel! So if the 3a flywheel does not bolt on, you may have to use 200mm 4age flywheel and get 4 holes filled and 2 drilled! I dunno if the 3a clutch will hold up too, you'll have to consider a SPEC stage 3 or higher it's about the only aftermarket clutch available that I kinda trust(never tried yet, waiting for a stage 4 trying to convince myself that I did a good bargain, but still quite pricey 354$ shipped to CAN.) Centerforce doesn't make em anymore new of 2012! Cause was inquiring in october and was available, maybe was a shelf leftover! Anyhow they only thing left to do it's to figure out if the 3a and 7a pattern are exactly the same! Good luck!
