Car is 1984 Tercel Wagon 5-spd 4WD, I have over 260,000 miles on it. I have done many repairs & replacements and am very good about maintainance.
Anyway, car is almost always in 2WD, as I would suppose most are. I was just stopped & idling 2 days ago with clutch depressed & car in gear, when the 2WD/4WD shifter just popped. After that when put back into 2WD position, there is nothing, it's just like neutral. In 4WD position I can drive car, seems pretty normal, but I feel just rear wheels have power. It got me home anyway.
Can anyone tell me what they think has happened? And also, will I do harm to my (precious) car if I drive it?
Thank you.

A couple of guys here suggested to me in another thread to check the front CV joint. I'm dealing with a car that will not move forward or backward, but haven't tried it in 4WD mode yet. You can read their response under "Transmission Question" here in the Repair Questions section. Good luck !!
1984 Tercel 4wd Dlx. - 192K miles.
1985 Tercel 4wd SR5 - 185K miles (not running)
1986 Tercel 4wd Dlx - 210K miles (dd)
Only 3 to go for the whole set ! lol

Maybe you've buggered the spline setup in the transfer case between 2WD and 4WD...
From the sounds of things, power from the engine is not getting to the transmission and then to the wheels.
Which is wierd as the front wheels are running all the time. It's only the back wheels that are slotting in and out...
I'd check your transmission over, personally. From clutch plate to the wheels. Somewhere there'll be something out of joint, or not in its right place and that'll be the problem.
I'd look at shifter arms, the levers that control the 4WD engaging, all the splined shafts along the way...
