22RE in a Tercel?
Hi, I'm considering buying a mid 80s tercel sr5 and I was just reading through some other forums and read that someone swapped a 22RE engine out of a Tercel to a truck. I was just wondering if I read that right, is it even possible to fit a 22RE into a Tercel and what sort of modifications need to be made if any?
Thanks
Thanks

Re: 22RE in a Tercel?
anything is possible with enough time, money, ingenuity, and resources but putting a 22RE would be a massive undertaking and not worth it, IMO. do a search on here for engine swaps and you'll see some of the different things people have got in to a tercel, including a diesel toyota engine, a rotary from an RX-7, lots of 4AG and 4AFs, the little ol' 4AC (a direct bolt in but minimal power gain)...like i said, you can make anything happen if you're really savvy about it.

Re: 22RE in a Tercel?
The 22re is waay taller than the stock engine. It also produces 137-142 pound/feet of torque and anything over 100 pound/feet is risking scattering the t4wd trans.
It would be an ok motor for a RWD only conversion as a much lower engine mounting location could be had without the t4wd trans assy.

Re: 22RE in a Tercel?
An adapter plate and a spacer for the release bearing could work(not a easy task)! But like mentioned above the torque would just kill the trans!
You could do a RWD conversion with a W series trans, with not so hardcore work! But I would definitely use another engine for a RWD unless you want to drag race! I'm thinkin rotary would kick serious butt! 7mge as well! And even the infamous 4AGE very close to rotary power!
If you really want a serious 22RE and nothing will make your mind change over it, TRD still offer a SCORE/NHRA 20R for 3500$ probably the cheapest engine available for serious bang(Race ready)!
To stay in a realistic affordable engine swap stay within the engine family, meaning A engine, will be way easier and cheaper!
I'll have to check that rotary one out! Interesting, I love rotary's, miss my rx7's so much! Am also thinking about using it on my next project!

Re: 22RE in a Tercel?
The rotary looks nice in the hood! Not much info,n searched on the net for more info! Didn't find much!
But I found this video of a 1st gen tercel rotary powered schooling a V8! Got to love the rotary when it screams!
http://m.youtube.com/watch?desktop_uri= ... aOz0&gl=US
That video gives me a huge taste to do it next! Although it's an expensive engine to deal with! So far cheaper alternative than the 4AGE to a certain extend, meaning if you want to crank the power of the 4age it can cost a lot, as for the rotary, you pretty much only have to deal with bearings, apex seal, porting and oil seal(main concern by experience but cheap to replace), no expensive cams and valvetrain,
N/A carbed 13B sounds tasty! Real mean sounding too with the flames in the back too, hmmmmm now I'm drooling! Lol

Re: 22RE in a Tercel?
rotary engines get really poor economy (not very efficient), the seals wear out about a third the life of normal piston rings, and parts are VERY costly to rebuild (a complete seal kit about $1400!). Not worth it IMPO. A V-8 would be an improvement over a rotary.
I will stick with the 4AGE, thank you.

Re: 22RE in a Tercel?
I don't agree on v8 being an improvement over the rotary! But do agree at the 4age being more economical to run but not if you want the power the price of parts are pretty high too!
Paid 3000$ 10 years ago to have a 12a rebuilded with carbon fiber apex seal(12000rpm rating) did blew the front seal everytime I passed 8500rpm barrier! cost 8$ who cares(had a 10000rpm rating one in titanium for 70$ got discontinued), I pop as many on the 3a! Probably will with my 4AG! My 12a dynoed out at 180hp(10000rpm) and 140ish torque(4000rpm)! Alright for drifting! To get that much power out of my 4ag I'm looking at well over 3000$ just in parts! So fairly similar on that side! Not many v8 are a match to a rotary maybe at start off but wait for those rpm to build up, I remember that if a v8 could keep up with me he wasn't stock and past 225km/h the v8 don't have much to give anymore and I had a fresh gear with my rx-7! It's just a matter of opinion and taste I believe!
But I want both a 4ag powered and a rotary powered, so maybe in a couple of years I'll be able to test it out! Sometime in a month when I get my clutch I'll do my 4ag swap, I got every thing almost ready, clutch ordered and paid! Then I'll start looking for a 13b or 20b rotary this summer and start preparing for next year project! Who knows I might change my mind but do like the idea a lot! I love doin these kind of projects, keeps me out of trouble!

Re: 22RE in a Tercel?
the only benefit the rotary offers is it packs a lot of hp into a small package. In all other areas it comes in dead last. For $3000 you could get a more reliable 4age, or for about half a much heavier built-up V8.
I would never want a rotary as a daily driver, nor for anything else.

Re: 22RE in a Tercel?
Well it won't be for daily driving I do not like the feel of it on the street good for tickets! But I want a fun car for the drag strip 20 min from my place! I'll use my pick up this summer for fun but not very competitive it punchs a good 300hp with 400 torque but so heavy! More of smoke show machine!

Re: 22RE in a Tercel?
I've built 22R(and 22RE) motors, while I would echo all the previous comments, I would have to add that on top of being a horrible choice for a Tercel 4WD, it's a VERY expensive poor choice. The 22R is a great platform for the pickup and those super-sweet Celica 2000GTs if you can find one. There are all sorts of parts to be had for the 22R, and if you're careful/patient you can find reasonably priced performance, but it's hard to get away with a good horsepower build for under $3,000 . If you'd like to buy one already built, you can get one in supercharged or turbo (or both) from http://www.lceperformance.com but you will be $6,000 to $12,000 into the motor and proper cooling mods to keep it from blowing up. Not to mention mods for deck height, accessory mounting brackets, crankshaft placement to get drive train parts square, and the fact that the oil sump is on the opposite end of the block from the 3A. The 4AC and 4AGE are more suitable, but like any other motor build horsepower is going to cost $. Picture attached is of the last 22R I built (Offenhauser intake, Webber carb, MSD Ignition, Pace Setter Header, Forged J&W Pistons .040 over, Ported/Polished/Port matched Head, Competition Cam (stage 3 grind), double sprung valve springs, double row timing chain and high volume oil pump from L.C. Engeneering, and a Black Magic Electric fan to keep it all to temperature. It took me 3 years to get parts on the cheap and I still ended up spending $3,500 on parts and machine work (and that's doing all the labor myself). I won't tell you what to build or how to build it, and I'll be the last guy to tell anyone how to get their gear-head on... but I would advise against trying to shoe-horn the 22R into a Tercel 4WD.

that's a beauty, MM. was it in a celica or truck? do you still have it or did you part ways?
