I have a complete running engine and transmission for sale. Located in Portland, OR. Local pick-up only. The engine and transmission are from my gold nugget tercel (84 4wd SR5). The engine is in very good shape for the mileage (235k). Compression is 135-140 across the 4. No head gasket leaks. It runs great. The transmission works great when warm, but is a bit difficult to shift when cold. Nothing bad, just not real smooth. It would be a great candidate for trans rebuild or squeeze another 40-60k out of it.
The carb was recently rebuilt (<1 year ago).
Recently did crank and camshaft seals, also valve stem seals and valve cover gaskets (<1 year)
Distributor and water pump only have 150k on them.
New NGK spark plugs
The oil pictured on the ground is from a slow leak at the drain plug gasket. Could be fixed with next oil change.
I think it is a fair price at $200, but I am open to offers, and motivated to make the space in the garage.
PM me or e-mail carson dot bro at gmail.com
I am also parting out another tercel 4wd wagon, so Pm me with parts requests. I will post more on that one in another thread.

Another 3A-C. I bought a complete parts car (cracked frame) with low miles (150k). I did the swap for the transmission and thought that I would get more power from the lower mile engine, but sadly, there is no noticeable difference. The transmission does shift smoother than the old one, but i don't know if it was worth all of the hassle.

i've had similar experiences. the first tercel i had, an '89 coupe, had slightly low compression in one cylinder when i bought it. after several years of faithful service, it finally went and i had to have the engine pulled and re-ringed. i expected it to be far more responsive when i got it back, but nope, felt like normal. i've also noticed people having similar experiences on this forum and have come to this conclusion: if nothing is obviously wrong and you do some preventative work, the work you do won't be noticeable; if something is obviously wrong and you fix it, the car will only be back to status quo. sometimes i have to remind myself that fixing stock stuff will not have the same effect as a performance upgrade, haha.
$200 is a good price for what you're selling i think though, i'm sure someone will take you up on it.
you should post pics of your terc sometime, i'm curious to see how you've restored it. it seems that you've been quietly diligent about it.

dlb, you are right. I just put ALL new suspension parts in the front end and it handles and shifts worse than before. I will get to that more in a nother thread. Just wanted to update this as the engine is SOLD.
