When do I change the timing belt?
I have a 1987 sr5 4wd wagon with the 3ac engine. I got the car last year with 112000 miles and have driven it 20000 more. I dont have any idea of the cars history. After reading all the posts on changing the belt, I am wondering what is the best way to check it . At what mileage should they be changed as a maintenance point.? Whats the best way to visually check if it was previously changed? Thanks. I have learned to love this car!

It's every 60,000 miles in general though you can get away with more. If it breaks, the car quits and you're stuck, but it's a non-interference engine so it doesn't do any damage. Changing it is pretty basic, some people have trouble getting the crankshaft pulley off but all the ones I've removed have come off easily, so I guess it's up to chance. You could take the cover off and check the label on the belt, if it's something other than Toyota then it's been changed. If there's cracks on the inside edge, then it's time to change it.
